Best way to get Letterman tickets?

Stand outside the Ed Sullivan theater and beg?
Seriously, Letterman tickets are hard to come-by to say the least. They are almost impossible to get. People wait for years to get them. Your name is put into a lottery and even then there's no guarantee your name will come up.
There really isn't much you can do. If you know someone at CBS you might luck out there, otherwise you can go early to the theater and stand in the "extra" audience line and hope someone doesn't show. They don't like to have empty seats.

Yeah they actually are hard to come by. But if I had one you could find it in my garbage can. I was disgusted after going there and realizing how his show is just a huge sham. ugh.
Leno would be an awesome show to see, but if you are going there see Conan, a crazy fool he is.

here's some info on their website. it would be too late for you to get tickets, but at the bottom it talks about if people don't show up, how to get tickets...

As said you are too late for tickets for when you are going, by getting them the old fashioned way.
The only option is "stand by line". Which people usually get there around 5 - 6am?! And they hand out tickets at some point which doesn't guarantee ANYTHING at all. Then tell you to come back at like 3pm.
Usually on any given day from what I've experienced and read is around 20 - 30 people will "no show" and that's how many will get in from stand by. Sometimes more sometimes less.
I use to LOVE when he did wacky things with the whole stand by line (the ones that didn't get in). Like one time took them to the GAP and then dressed them all the same and paraded them around. And one time actually stuck them all on a bus for a vacation?! It was wild way back when!

Several years ago I put my name in on the website for the ticket lotto. A few months after that, I got two tickets in the mail -- the show tape date was my 18th birthday! Since you have to be 18 to be in the audience, I thought it was pretty cool.
Of course I knew I wouldn't be able to go, since I'm from Seattle. But it's still neat to have them!
(BTW: Of course, my seats were recycled for the stand by line -- no wasted seats from me.)
Think Letterman is hard to get into? I'd say that the hardest show to get into nowadays is Saturday Night Live.
