why do some celebrities do lame commercials?
Mike Piazza looks so stupid doing the 10-10-220 commercials. Same with Terry Bradshaw. Why do they degrade themselves to that level? They don't need the gig ($) or anything.
I can understand David Arquette doing those dumb AT&T commercials, but ...

Piazza does it to distract people from the fact that he's the worst fielding catcher in the history of the major leagues. Bradshaw and others, because they probably get paid an insane amount of money for 2 hours of work. It's not like they have anything else to do.

Long Distance commercials are the kiss of death to a career I think. Like a last breath of air before you drown.
Look at Ed O'Neill (married with children), CarrotTop, Marlon Wayans, Arsenio Hall, Alyssa Milano doing 1-800-CALL-ATT crap.

Teri Hatcher and Howie Long have been doing them Radio Shack commercials for ... forever it seems, almost to a point where it seems that that's their careers.

As for them not needing the $, do you think there are actually celebs or athletes who don't want more money, regardless of how much they have?
BTW, I love Sela ward!

I'm in the Bill Hicks camp on this. I don't really care about the sport jocks who do it. It's the people in the artistic field that bug me. As hicks puts: 'If you do a commercial, take yourself off the artistic roll call for life. From now on you are nothing more than a corporate shill, perfectly willing to sell your soul for a buck.' Exceptions to this rule being that struggling actor just trying to squeak out a living on his/her way up to artistic freedom, and, those who are so down on their luck and need money fast i.e. Willie Nelson and the IRS pinch. My own exceptions include the aforementioned Sela Ward and Alyssa Milano. I like watching them in anything, period. IMO, I don't think Milano was ever really considered an artisan of her craft. I love her anyway. Another to ad (<--Intentional) to the list of shills in this thread is George Carlin. I was so disappointed by that. Just shook my head when that commercial came on.

I think in some cases that celebrities may donate money to charities. I was really suprised to see George Carlin do a phone ad, he doesn't seem like somone into excesses. I know that his wife died of cancer so maybe he donated his pay to cancer programs.
