Reality TV

Shows on television such as Big Brother , Big Brother 2, Temptation Island 1 & 2, Survivor , Survivor 2 , upcoming Survivor 3, Murder in Smalltown X and etc. are really pissing me off. Networks keep adding more and more of these reality crap to the airwaves constantly - why not put on some worthwhile programmming . Shows with actual stories and situations people can really get into . Not jungle idiots playin games or lame college students living together and having sex and whatnot. There is only one exception though. The only reality show, in my opinion , that passes has to be the one and only "Cops". It's a classic!

Well, Reality TV is really just a game show combined with a soap opera. Nobody seems to have a problem with tons of Game shows being on tv, and nobody is griping about the tons of soap operas on TV, so whats the beef with Reality TV programs? We got 1 hour Who wants to be a Millionaires and Weakest Links eating up as much prime-time programming time as Reality TV shows. Temptation Island was stupid, but I've enjoyed all the other reality shows so far.

Pick your poison: rehashed reality TV or Sitcoms that simply recycle plots from The Dick van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy, and The Honeymooners or endeavor to become "the next Seinfeld." Network TV will constantly throw crappola our way. Look at what NBC brought us this last season: Titans? First Years? Whether it's The Weakest Link, Big Brother 2, When Network TV Executives Attack IV, or the next big Hill Street Blues/St. Elsewhere ripoff, crap will always come in waves from the networks.

People as a whole are mindless and stupid and would rather watch 5 hours of Millionaire than 30 minutes of SportsNight. Why? Because good shows make you think, and thinking is hard, and it's unfair to expect anyone to do anything hard. Network TV is all about formula. Find something that works, and stick to it, no matter how stupid it is. And as much as we complain, there are people watching this crap - that's what's so sad and disturbing. ABC wouldn't have put Millionaire on the air for 600 hours a week if people weren't watching it like mindless drones.

I will defend both Survivors, for while they started this problem, they were good shows. People will inevitably sit around and talk about how stupid they were just to be anti-establishment, because that's "in" these days, but they were well-cast, well-produced, interesting shows. But why anyone wastes their time on the mindless Survivor clones is beyond me. There is no one on the face of the planet less creative than a Network TV executive. But who can blame them? It used to be that people could argue, "all the Networks are showing crap, and I have to watch one of them." But that doesn't hold true anymore. Most people have some 200+ channels on their TV, and there is plenty of quality spread out among those channels. The simple "reality" is this: if people didn't sit around watching this crap, they wouldn't show it.

Really is unfortunate. Too often, the smart shows just get canned. I hate really getting into a show only to watch it get canned, like ABC's My So-Called Life some 7-8 years ago, or last year's The $treet.

As for Survivors, I think the first one is more defendable. They added too much drama to the second one.

I don't know. I have to agree with TV Land: "Reality TV. Just like reality, it often sucks."

Combine that with "TVLand: It's 34% Better Than Real Life" and it really makes you wonder why we have all those "reality" shows.

Only one good thing Survivor brought out to us was Ms. Colleen Haskell.
