German channel starts "Big Diet" reality TV

BERLIN, May 31 (AFP) -
A German television channel has launched the "Big Diet" for fat people who want to slim in an effort to reverse a decline in interest in its "Big Brother" reality show.

The private TV station RTL-2 began the series last Sunday featuring a race to lose weight by 12 obese people, the biggest of whom tips the scales at 153 kilograms (about 336 lbs).

The contestants kicked off in a luxury mansion with endless sessions of gymnastics, massage, lessons in diet cooking and medical examinations.

There was no time to grab a chocolate bar or a cream cake to supplement their daily intake of 1,200 calories - consumed under the eyes of 42 cameras.

Viewers are encouraged to take part in the aerobics and the cooking lessons.

One of the show's presenters is former fatty Margarethe Schreinemakers, a 42-year-old who has resuscitated after four years of oblivion as a flyweight Lolita.

"If people say: 'Hey! Here we are stuck in front of the box. Let's get up and do something', then we shall have achieved something," said Margarethe, who wears a T-shirt covered with red hearts and a similarly-coloured bandeau.

Each week, those who fail to attain the weight-loss goal will be sent home and after three months, those who have lost the most kilograms will be given the same weight in gold.

But the 12 contestants, selected from 7,800, say they are not in it for the lucre. Said Klaus, the one who weighs 153 kilos: "My wife would like me to lose a few kilos," while Katja (96 kilos) said the show was "her last chance."
