A problem with a premise like this, last man standing, is that people would likely last for years trying to win that million dollars. They'd never get the show on, and if they did they'd lose audiences because it's so drawn out and boring and never seems like it'll end.
The title of the show can be a bit misleading, but they are truly doing their best to survive in their environment. Not necessarily against the elements as one might tend to believe if just seeing a show or two, but against the challenges and the other players' scheming.
Again, you really have to watch more than just a few shows or just bits of the finale to truly get into the show. I was a bit disheartened by the beginning of this second season after watching the first, but it was only because I had grown to know and care what happened to the people in the first season.
I said to myself, these people are no where near as good as the first group, but I continued to watch and by the end I felt the same about this survivor as I did about the last... even more so.
I guess what I'm saying is it takes patience. You don't pick up a book and decide it's not good after 1 chapter, the same thing happens with Survivor. It isn't just a television show that you can say, hey that sucked, after one viewing because it's the whole experience from beginning to end that is what makes this show so loved by people.
So if you hate it and have only seen bits and pieces here and there and really wonder what the hype is, then try watching it for a month. I guarantee you'll be hooked. I've converted several diehard Survivor haters and it seems like they're pretty much hooked after the fourth week if I can get them to watch it that many times.

I enjoyed the first especially near the end. But I couldn't stand all the back-stabbing.
The second group were better. They weren't completely honest all the time but they were less inclined to get into the whole dumb alliance matter. I swear I'd rather not hear the word "alliance" again. And the first survivors need to finish their fifteen minutes of fame. Who isn't sick of Richard Hatch and that Susan woman?
There was too much retread in the second. Eating worms, bugs, etc. The reward challenge with the ropes. Standing on a log the longest. Live chickens as rewards. Living it up on a boat as another reward. Locating objects in the dark as another challenge. Too much same ole, same ole. I'll watch the third but these people have to come up with something more original.
