What's the Best Portable Hard Drives (and Flash Drives) To Store Stuff?

I have 2 Western Digital "My Passport" Ultras portable hard drives for my data (I'm thinking of buying a third). My friend told me that Western Digital is probably the best brand for that (I bought those drives before he told, FYI). He also said that Flash Drives are a (relatively decent) way to store your most personal info. He also said I should look into a Blu ray burner to back up my hard drive as well (as Blu rays are water proof).

So basically:

What's the best brand hard drive on the market to use for backing stuff up?

What's the best flash drive on the market?

And are there any Blu ray burners that are Mac compatible?
(My OS is 10.6.8 )

Anyway, thanks for your time and replies.

Might be personal preference, but I also prefer Western Digital as far as portable drives go and have two passport drives myself.

I'm not that picky on flash drives, i have a few different brands including Kingston, Samsung, and Transcend and they all generally work ok. I wouldn't trust them to save personal info though, since they're pretty easy to misplace.

Just avoid Seagate like the plague.

I haven't had any problems with Seagate, but lots of Western Digital preference in a 2016 thread:

External HD, which brand is the best?

Re: What's the Best Portable Hard Drives (and Flash Drives) To Store Stuff?

My preferred brand is Western Digital. Started buying the bigger WD Elements External HD(USB 2.0) in 1, 1.5, 2.0TB sizes in 2009. I have 9 of these hard drives. Switch over to the portable external WD (Elements, Passport & My Passport). These are mostly USB 3.0 & 2TB in size.

My #14 HD was a WD 2TB Silver My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive for $50 from Walmart. I just brought #15 & #16 WD 2TB MY Passport hard drives from OD for $50 each. So far I have three 8TB WD hard drives to backup the 14 hard drives I have filled up. I will buy another one as soon as it drops to $129 again.

I did have one of the older 1.5TB drives fail because I dropped it off the computer desk while it was being written to. But was able to salvage everything off the HD even though it took a long time due to slow reads. Since it was still under warranty from WD. I returned it & they send me a new 2TB one.

So, solid state drives are better? I have a 2009 Mac Book Pro. Is there a great SSD that has a USB cord to your knowledge? I'm a babe in the woods with this stuff.

SSD's are normally/generally faster but will be limited by their interface USB2 or USB3, etc. They are also more expensive capacity vs capacity. For large storage capacity at the lowest price its still seems to be mechanical HD's.

Vote for WD. Have never failed me. On the other hand, stay away from Seagate.

Also, I'm considering buying a 256gb Sandisk flash drive. Are those pretty reliable? They have one at Walmart for around $48. What's the best one?

(I'm backing up as much stuff as I possibly can and as many ways I can)

They are better but not by a wide margin. They are faster and some are shock resistant. They are also way too expensive. If you got the cash to burn. What I also like is that they are silent, nothing is moving inside them. I wish Samsung will lower the prices so I can pick a few up.

Another vote for the WD external drives. I use both the smaller My Passports and the larger My Books. Stay far away from the Seagate brand as pretty much everyone else here has said.

Re: What's the Best Portable Hard Drives (and Flash Drives) To Store Stuff?

Blackblaze has put some of the larger Seagate drives ahead of the WD drives in the reliability dept.

It's hit or miss with regards to quality between the two. Just a note though. Seagate's larger drives labeled as "archive series" were designed for cold storage, not daily 24:7 - 365 use.

I currently have eight 8TB models, 4 of each brand in use. Have had my share of failures across all brands. I finally had a boot SSD start to fail on me last month. They are a PITA to work with in regards to data recovery.

If you're looking into all possible ways, I recommend adding an online solution. I'm using Onedrive for all my file backups and will likely add an automated backup like BackBlaze soon.

Check the most recent conversation in this thread (because some of the services have disappeared since the start of the thread):

Best way to backup data?

Re: What's the Best Portable Hard Drives (and Flash Drives) To Store Stuff?

I think hard drives can be a crap shoot, especially these days. It's more about how you store them (temp and RH), in what type of environment (dust / smoke-free) than about any one brand being "better". However, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a the WD black series, or the Seagate Firecuda as it has a 5-year warranty.

SSDs do seem to be dropping in price of late, but they're still super-expensive, about 8-10x what a comparatively-sized mechanical drive costs. I've seen 1 TB SSDs as low as $189, which is getting better, but it'll have to be sub-$100 for 1TB before I'll think about it.

And, you'll see very little difference from SSD vs mechanical HD when plugged into a USB3 port, and no difference at all when plugged into a USB2 port. You need to plug an SSD into an internal SATA-3 port to achieve the roughly 5x performance benefit in throughput over traditional hard drives. You'll get about 500 mb/sec sequential out of a SATA SSD vs 100-150 mbps sequential out of the best mechanical drives. Smaller files will transfer much, much faster on an SSD than a mechanical drive.

Just bought a 4TB WD My Passport drive for $99. Can't complain about that.

Re: What's the Best Portable Hard Drives (and Flash Drives) To Store Stuff?

While they aren't as portable as 2.5" externals, and aren't as cheap as most consumer grade drives (although B&H throws them on sale fairly often), I have had good luck with the Glyph BlackBox Pro enterprise class. In addition to workstation backups, I have several of them in rotation for a server backup that is taken offsite weekly, which I'm sure subjects them to a bit of jostling, and I haven't had one fail yet.

Also:

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro (with an operating system of 10.6.8). Does it matter if I buy a hard drive or flash drive formatted to something higher? (I know how to reformat a disk.) Can I use any portable hard drive/flash drive I want?

(I just want to be sure I don't buy something I can't use)

Yup. Exactly the one I got. They're also the same price at Best Buy if you want to physically pick one up.

And it's worth repeating: multiple backup devices, at least one offline, and do a test restore periodically.

If you're looking for professional grade hard drives that are often used in the film industry, try G-Tech drives.
