Google Play coming to select Chromebooks in 2016-17

The Google Play Store Is Coming to Chromebooks
'Over a million apps and games' will be available on your Chromebook.

Linky: https://chrome.googleblog.com/2016/0...coming-to.html

tl;dr.... select Chromebooks will be getting an OS update that will include new integration with the Google Play Store, allowing download and installation of Android apps.

We launched Chromebooks for people who wanted a fast, simple and secure computing experience. Chromebooks just work -- open the lid, and within seconds, you’re on your favorite sites and apps, getting stuff done. Virus protection and automatic updates are built-in, so you don't have to manage your computer. And that’s worked great for our users. Schools in the US are now buying more Chromebooks than all other devices combined -- and in Q1 of this year, Chromebooks topped Macs in overall shipments to become the #2 most popular PC operating system in the US*.

We’ve been encouraged by this growth, but our users have often told us that they would like to do even more with their Chromebooks -- run more apps, use Office files more easily, connect with a variety of apps, and do more when they’re offline.

So, we're bringing Google Play (the most popular app store in the world) to Chromebooks. This means you’ll be able to download and use Android apps, so you can make a Skype call, work with Office files and be productive offline -- or take a break with games like Minecraft, Hearthstone or Clash of Clans. The same apps that run on phones and tablets can now run on Chromebooks without compromising their speed, simplicity or security. This is good for users and great for developers - in addition to phones and tablets, they will be able to easily bring their apps to laptops. And all this is built on top of Chrome OS, so users will continue to have everything they love in their Chromebooks.

Google Play will start rolling out in the developer channel with M53 on the ASUS Chromebook Flip, the Acer Chromebook R 11 and the latest Chromebook Pixel. Over time, this will roll out to other Chromebooks in the market too. And, we've also been working with our partners to launch some great new devices specially designed for Play. Stay tuned for more details to come over the next few months.

We’ll keep a list of supported Chromebooks here, and will share news about new models on the Chrome channel on Google Plus and Twitter.

Chromebooks have always been about making computing more accessible for everyone, and by bringing together the best of Android and Chrome OS, we are taking a big leap forward. Not only are we addressing many of the existing needs and use cases that people have for their Chromebooks, we are also betting on the millions of developers who are innovating every day to build the next great experience that wasn’t even possible on PC platforms before. This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for everyone!

OMGChrome has been tracking this and has compiled a list of models that will be getting Play Store integration:

Find Out If Your Chromebook Will Support Android Apps

Google is bringing millions of Android app to Chromebooks with the launch of Google Play for Chrome OS — but not every device will be able to join in the fun.

Google has a list of Chromebooks that support Android apps and, rather shockingly, a number of best-selling devices are not on the list.

Find out if your device is among them by looking at the list below.

If your Chromebook is a couple of years old then there’s a good chance that you’ll get access to millions of Android app later this year. Many older Chrome OS devices sadly won’t. Among the well-known devices to miss out is the original Google Chromebook Pixel, released in 2013, the best-selling Acer C720 Chromebook, and every Chromebase model released so far.

It’s also worth noting that not every Chromebook will get access to Google Play at the same time. Support for the feature will roll out in stages.

The following 3 devices will be given early access next month, with the launch of Chrome OS v53 on the developer channel:

•ASUS Chromebook Flip
•Acer Chromebook R11 / C738T
•Google Chromebook Pixel (2015)

The rest of the devices, grouped by OEM:

The HiSense Chromebook 11 was available on Woot for $89 just a couple of weeks ago. It's a low-end model (2 GB/16GB, 11.6" Display, 2x USB 2.0 and no USB 3.0), but it's easily the lowest price point through which one can enter the Chromebook/Play market. I picked one up last time they were available in anticipation of this... I also have a Toshiba Chromebook 2 that should be compatable.

Big deal... All chromebooks will support android apps if jailbroken and / or hacked with custom OS of course!!

Misleading news on the "artificial limitation / crippling" technology front...

Official support actually is a big deal, even if there were prior work arounds.

Re: Google Play coming to select Chromebooks in 2016-17

Android apps are now available on the dev and beta channel for:
•Asus Chromebook Flip.
•Acer Chromebook R11 / C738T
•Google Chromebook Pixel (2015)

Plus, over 20 additional Chromebook models have been added to the "will work later in 2016/2017" list. I've updated the list in the previous post - new models shown in red.
