Amazon Echo

Fairly impressive. Too bad it doesn't have rechargeable capability so you can take it anywhere as a bluetooth speaker.

Re: Amazon Echo

$99 for Prime members with invites.

Looks like a Moto X without, you know, a Moto X.

Re: Amazon Echo

If it had rechargeable capabilities, people would turn it off when they're not using it. If it is plugged in all the time, it's on all the time. If it's on all the time, it's listening all the time.

Re: Amazon Echo

Considering how f'ing big it is, I'm genuinely surprised it doesn't have a rechargeable battery. WTF is inside there that it needs to be so big?

Re: Amazon Echo

Fuck it, I requested an invite. What else am I going to spend $99 on?

Amazon wants to listen in on me? Go right ahead. I dare Amazon to start recommending me alcohol and hardcore pornography when I visit their site.

Re: Amazon Echo

This looks like something that would be cool...for about 15 minutes. Then I'd just be ticked that it's one more thing to dust every time I clean.

But I'm a sucker for new technology, so I signed up to see if I get an invite...then I'll decide if I actually want to sink $100 into this - maybe I'll just gift it to someone for Christmas (if they're out by then).

Looks like a big version of Siri which I don't bother using most of the time anyway. Pass...

This appears to be Amazon's version of Big Brother's telescreen... Avoid at all costs unless you want to be monitored 24/7 by one whose intentions aren't good.

I signed up. No way I'd spend $200 on it -- I have a great wireless Bluetooth speaker JBL Charge which I really love and use frequently, but at $99 I'm willing to give the new tech a whirl. If nothing else it'll be worth it just to watch my son ask it a million butt/fart questions.

Re: Amazon Echo

Yeah, seems like a immobile version of Siri so not that appealing. I wonder if it plays only Prime music or something.

Music: Listen to your Amazon Music Library, Prime Music, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio.

So those are the ones built-in, but it can stream from your phone as well.

Re: Amazon Echo

I wonder what the deal with the "Invitation" to buy is. If a Prime Member requests an invitation and is turned down, I'm sure he'd be pissed that he'd have to pay double instead. Any explanation anywhere as to who does or does not rate an invite?

my guess is to gauge the demand for production purposes.

I'm not even sure I want one but I'll be pissed if I don't get an invite with all I spend at Amazon.

Need some pickles? Cool. Just say “Alexa, add pickles to my shopping list.” (Note: Echo listens for the word “Alexa” by default. You can pick a different name, it seems.) It won’t order them for you yet. It’ll just add them to a list for you to look at later.

But if Echo sees any sort of success, just watch how fast that will change.

You’ll be able to say “Alexa, order me a copy of Kung Fu Panda 2,” and it’ll be done.

“Alexa, order me some dope-ass high thread count egyptian cotton sheets.” Bam. Done. Sheets are on the way.

One-click purchase becomes no-click purchase. Your entire house (or at least, anything within earshot of Alexa) becomes the impulse-buy candy shelf from the grocery store’s checkout lane.

My statement stands, it has nothing to do with liking or disliking Amazon. Their end goal is a disguised good into an evil (greedy, avaricious) end. It sets a very bad precedent ... Siri at least doesn't try to sell you anything, and I think we could do without her, also. Sometimes thinking for ourselves is better than getting a canned answer back from a tech gadget or device, no?
