Anyone have a drone?

I am apparently getting one of these soon as a gift.

http://www.dji.com/product/phantom-2-vision-plus

Anyone have one or one similar? Any tips?

I have no idea what I am going to do with it. I'm sure I'll come up with something.

No i'm not going to use it spy on my neighbors or anything. I guess just aerial flights around the neighborhood until someone shoots it down.

Re: Anyone have a drone?

One of my coworkers has one, it looks like something that technix would make, if it was all one solid piece. He seems pretty thrilled with it, although flight time is only about 8 minutes, with a battery taking 30 minutes to charge. He's got a gopro, as well as another camera and goggles that lets him fly from the drone's perspective. It also has a gps ability to return from the starting point if it should go further than his remote control can reach.

If you have any questions, I can ask him and return with his answers.

I have a whole bunch. There's a paper wasp hive under my hot tub. You want 'em?

Re: Anyone have a drone?

My Brother has that Phantom 2 with a GoPro

*REMEMBER TO SET GPS !!!
My Brother tested this feature and it worked like a charm. You set the GPS concordance to your current location and if and when it goes out of range, it comes back to you. No lost drone.
Buy extra propellers. Buy propeller guards.

Re: Anyone have a drone?

Thanks all. Do I need extra propellers if I have the propeller guards? I mean if the propellers are breaking then the guards aren't working right?

Also I have never flown one of these and I'm a little nervous to be starting with such an expensive device. Should I get a little $50 one and practice flying that around or is it really so much different controls that it wouldn't do me any good?

And thanks for the tip on the GPS. I certainly do plan on using that!

Re: Anyone have a drone?

That is a really good drone. Read everything that came with it. Download any firmware updates. First few flights, find a very large open area/field.

This link has alot of good info

Re: Anyone have a drone?

Make sure you know the local laws pertaining to flying drones. You can always call the non-emergency police number and get some basic info. There are more and more restrictions going into effect depending on population of wherever you live. Or you can always check online as well. I use it for areal photography for real estate. I actually contact the police and let them know in advance just as a heads up. One time someone called the police to tell them I was “spying” on people. Police shut them down fast and let them know they knew what I was doing.

They’re fun to use, but just be aware of the areas you decide to fly it in. Even parks have restrictions a lot of the time.

I was given the $50 Sharper Image drone for Christmas, and it was frustrating to use. If there is a 2 mph wind, I have to hold the direction control lever full over just to hover in place. If there's a 4 mph wind, it blows into the neighbor's yard.

Re: Anyone have a drone?

^^ I had a cheap one, and the DJI I bought is night and day different. Stable, hovers in place and stays mostly still.

I have a Mavic Pro. Like it much better than the Phantom 4. The portability of it is just awesome.

Re: Anyone have a drone?

I had a phantom 3 a while back but now I have a Mavic Pro. Itís great. Compact, still have the 4K ability and good distance. I hit almost 2 miles last week before I started my return to home

A few apps which come in handy are:

B4UFly
Hover
AirMap

These will tell you if you are in a fly/no fly zone, what airports your around and how to contact the tower etc

Are you trying to make $$? How hard was the test? I have a Phantom 4 Pro 2.0 and I was thinking about it.

I bought the $16 ASA Test Prep book and the $4.99 app. I read the book twice and took about 40-50 Prep tests on the app and got a 93%.
