Software to manage assets?

At my organization, one group is responsible for a number of physical assets (cameras, tripods, video equipment) that is being loaned out to individuals on a regular basis. Currently, the loans are being administered using an excel sheet, but that is showing some limitations.

So, what I need to try and find is a software package (ideally free, but there is some budget) that is AD integrated and that we can track our loans. The software could have fancy stuff like automated email alerts when the equipment is overdue etc, but that is more a nice to have. The basic functionality is just to track who has what.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

You should look for rental management software. I found one called RentalDesk NX that has a "Start Up" version available for free:
