Is dying SATA port a sign of further trouble?

First, the pertinent specs: My motherboard is an ASUS A8V Deluxe, purchased about 2005. Has two SATA controllers, VIA and Promise.

I discovered recently that one of the ports on the Promise controller is dying. The drive connected to it would suddenly become unstable, Windows would freeze, and the drive would disappear from the system. I thought the drive, itself, was failing, but I connected another to the same port (with a different cable), and it, too, encountered problems.

If one port on a SATA controller is dying, what does that mean for the other port? What does that mean for the rest of the motherboard? I'm just wondering how much I can trust this hardware now. The second port on the Promise controller is functioning fine, and the motherboard is exhibiting no other symptoms of impending trouble.

Re: Is dying SATA port a sign of further trouble?

8 years is pretty old for a motherboard. And 2005 is rather early in the life of SATA.

Capacitors on the board could be starting to fail. I recently had to replace a 10 year old motherboard as it couldn't handle the processor's speed and would only run at about 25% of the actual speed. Once I got the board out I could see that most of the capacitors around the CPU had blown and were leaking. It's a fairly common issue for all electronics produced in the early to mid 2000s, there were a lot of cheap capacitors being used.

But it could just be that one single port has failed. It's not unheard of for that to happen. It doesn't mean the whole thing is about to die, but after 8 years of service, it not a bad thing to start looking at an upgrade.
