solid state hd talk: how much were they before the flood?

HDD's were made in Thailand which suffered floods. Did they also produce SSD's there as well?

I'm just wondering how much were they before the flood.
prices are starting to drop down now, about $1/gb after rebates, etc.

SSD prices didn't spike after the floods. Maybe they just didn't go down as much as they might since they were more in demand given the price of HDDs.

HDD prices are going back down now as are SSDs.

I haven't noticed HDs dropping much.

I only buy externals, so those are the only ones I pay attention to, but they're still as expensive as fuck. Still hovering around $100 for a 500gb on Amazon. The last ones I bought before the flood were about $50-$60 for the same drives.

Back in September 2010 I bought a Samsung EcoGreen 2 TB drive. It cost me $108, including taxes, shipping and coupon.

Right now the price is $160 for the same drive at NewEgg, the place where I bought it.

To quote myself from a few months ago:

That exact hard drive is now $84.73 on Amazon.

The Seagate Momentus XT, one of the hybrid hard drive solutions available, was $79 - 99 when I was looking at the 500GB model back in September. During the flooding, the price on it skyrocketed to over $200. The price is now down to $129 with the newer 750GB model coming in around $159 depending where on where you look.

SSDs have been making their way down in price as they weren't affected by the flooding (a lot are made in China, Japan, Israel, etc). One can pick up a 512GB SSD for $649 whereas a year ago at this time they ranging around $800 - 1000 in price.

SSD's seem like they've been dropping slowly for a little while now. Being able to get a Crucial M4 256 GB for $340 is pretty awesome to me.

Just before the prices jumped, I was very close to buying a 2TB drive for $80. I was waiting for it to go on sale for $70 as it had before.

Sigh.

Ha! I thought I was the only loser!

I brought a 1.5 TB for $50 (and free shipping) and was waiting for Black Fri to stock up on 2TB drives which I figured I could get for roughly $70 bucks just like you.

When I first saw the “highway robbery” prices in Nov., I nearly fainted.
Hopefully, by xmas 2013, the Hard drive prices will be much lower than they are now.

Re: solid state hd talk: how much were they before the flood?

That was the boat I was in. Didn't really need storage back in September, but knew I would around the new year so was waiting for Black Friday sales to pick up a 2 or 3TB drive. Whoops. I've been jumping through hoops for the last month deleting files and moving stuff around to drives that don't make a ton of logical sense. It's annoying.

I'm happy I stocked up on 6 Hitachi 2TB drives for $60 each about a month or two before the flood.

Best Buy had a 3TB HDD for Black friday at $99. So far it's been great but I am slowly creaping up on having it full. Now I'm just hoping they come down again before next football season.

256 GB Crucial M4 is down to $295 on Amazon. I've been watching this for the last couple weeks and it keeps dropping.
