How to encrypt Apple Time Capsule?

Hi All,

I just got an Apple Time Capsule 4.0 2tb version. I'm trying to encrypt the time capsule via Time Machine however i'm reading here that you can't encrypt devices unless they are physically connected?? as I'm wirelessly connected to the TC, is this possible?

http://hints.macworld.com/article.ph...10721124750102

Right now the 'encrypt disk' option on Time Machine is greyed out.

As it has my data on it i want to ensure it's fully encrypted, especially as it's a wireless hard drive.

Re: How to encrypt Apple Time Capsule?

Just wondering if anyone knows if Apple has resolved this issue and enabled the ability to encrypt the time capsule wirelessly?

I checked the site, they said you need FileVault 2 to do it:

Re: How to encrypt Apple Time Capsule?

How do I tell if I have filevault2? As far as I can tell, filevault 2 is 'filevault' on Lion, correct? I've got Lion 10.7.4 and I still cannot encrypt my time capsule wirelessly?

I'm going to be safe to assume, knowing Apple, it'll be FileVault 2.

can you please expand on this? basically i just want to ensure that my data is safe if someone physically steals the time capsule and accesses the data. I know they would need my hd password, but what if they put the HD in an external USB hd enclosure to physically connect to the HD to copy over the data? are you saying the data is encrypted?

Time Capsule is explicitly a wifi-device, so I don't think it needed to be specified. If it can do encrypted backups on Time Capsule it can do them over wifi. The issue with earlier versions of Time Machine was that it'd only encrypt directly-connected discs, not network connected drives. It doesn't matter if that network drive is via wifi or ethernet.

BTW, there's a workaround for OS X 10.6 and 1.07, where you create a encrypted sparse bundle on the Time Capsule that Time Machine backups to:

Thank you for the revised link to the apple website - time capsule can indeed be encrypted with mountain lion! Fantastic - I just ordered one, looking forward to getting mountain lion!

I'm assuming there's no way to encrypt time capsule over wifi with lion whilst i'm waiting for mountain lion?

Again, Todd B. posted this workaround for Lion which will let you backup to an encrypted sparsebundle on your Time Capsule over wifi:
