Dish Blockbuster Streaming

Posting a thread to let people know that the prices will be announced on Sept 23.

Predictions? Mine is $10 a month with more movies but fewer tv shows than Netflix. I also expect BB to have everything with CC or subtitles. We'll see.

Dish Said to Unveil Blockbuster Streaming Prices Next Week

(Updates shares in penultimate and final paragraph.)

Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Dish Network Corp. will announce pricing next week for its Blockbuster streaming-movie service, which will compete with Netflix Inc., a person with knowledge of the plan said.

The second-largest U.S. satellite-TV company will hold a press conference on Sept. 23 to announce subscription costs and other details for the service, according to the person, who declined to be identified because the plan isn't public.

Dish is unveiling the service next month to take advantage of Netflix's recent price increases, said the person. Englewood, Colorado-based Dish, which acquired most of Blockbuster Inc.'s assets in April for $320 million, aims to boost its subscribers by offering the online service with its pay-TV packages, said the person. Non-Dish customers who only want Blockbuster's offering will eventually be able to do so, the person said.

Aaron Johnson, a spokesman for Dish, declined to comment.

Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, began charging separate fees for mail-order and streaming videos, effectively raising the price by 60 percent to $15.98 for customers who want both options.

Netflix fell the most in more than three years yesterday after cutting its U.S. subscriber forecast, following the price increase. The shares declined $14.06, or 8.3 percent, to $155.19 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading, after dropping 19 percent yesterday.

Dish rose 47 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $26.29. The shares have gained 34 percent this year.

If they want to go after Netflix they should launch with services for the game consoles and phones right away. Hopefully they will have the new releases available to stream as well. That would get me to consider cancelling my streaming plan w/ netflix.

Hopefully they'll offer some good HD selections and an app for PS3, 360 or Roku.

I'm not married to Netflix streaming. If they have a better service, I would switch. However I think it's going to take a while to be able to watch this on my 360 and phone like I can do now with Netflix.

That's a huge issue in my opinion. Right now I can stream Netflix on both of my Blu-ray players, Xbox, PS3, iPad, Android Phone, Apple TV, etc. etc. Getting BB streaming on my computer is something I will never use.

At $8 Netflix is like herpes. You can't get rid of it

The competition is going to have a hard time beating the price point

Re: Dish Blockbuster Streaming

I'm hopeful they'll offer some kind of free trial to existing Dish customers so that I can compare it to Netflix and decide which I like best.

A PS3 app is a must though.

Re: Dish Blockbuster Streaming

Hulu says watch some new episodes by signing in to your Dish Networks account. Is this a recent thing? Maybe it has something to do with BB.

Re: Dish Blockbuster Streaming

Disappointing so far - appears to be for dish customers only.

$10 a month.
Or included with $39.99 America Top 200 package.

edit: for both streaming and disc. Still only 34k titles for streaming, 100k for discs - about same as netflix.
A decent deal if you are a Dish customer and don't mind a contract.

Nothing mentioned for non-subscribers.. I guess I'm staying with Netflix for streaming.

Re: Dish Blockbuster Streaming

Dish customers only? Not going to be able to compete with Netflix that way.

If this is for everybody, will stream to consoles, and doesn't have commercials (like Hulu Plus), I'll give it a spin.

they don't have to go head to head

if 1 million of netflix customers are also dish customers that's a lot of potential customer losses. netflix is like vonage in this, once the bigger companies release streaming as another part of their service with similar selection then it's hard to justify paying the extra charge

Re: Dish Blockbuster Streaming

Dish Network only? That's really disappointing. Given how many small websites have a Roku channel, it can't be that hard or expensive to implement. I guess they're more interest in promoting Dish Network than selling Blockbuster subscriptions.

I don't think it will - seems like this is really just Dish throwing in blockbuster's current disc/game rental plan and Hulu. Doesn't seem like blockbuster will do the actual streaming, I guess some of us were expecting too much from BB. For example, Glee's hulu page says:
Connect to your DISH Network account to watch new episodes on your computer the day after they air on TV.
http://www.hulu.com/glee
I just read that the America Top 200 plan is $40/month only for the first year, then $60 afterwards.
