Recovering deleted photos from memory card: Can it be done?

My wife inadvertently deleted a few hundred photos from a memory card while attempting to transfer to our HD.

I've heard there is a way to still get the images from the card as long as it hasn't been re-formatted, but I don't know it that's a myth or not.

Anyone have any luck doing this? Or is this an urban legend.
Is there software available or do I need to go to a camera shop?

You can do it. Do a search for software and you'll find some. The hardcore way to do it, which we had to learn for computer forensics, is to use winhex.

The way it usually works for files that get deleted is that the first, or first few, bytes get changed to a character(s), which indicates that it's considered deleted and that the data can be written over.

You should be able to do this yourself with software.

You may need a card reader if your camera doesn't allow direct disk access to the card.

Here are some free recovery programs to try: http://lifehacker.com/5237503/five-b...recovery-tools

I would try the Recuva first. If it doesn't find the files try PhotoRec, which will do a more thorough scan.

woo-hoo!

I tried Recuva first and it worked like a charm!

Thanks for ALL the great suggestions - I have filed them away for future reference...

Another vote for Recuva. I had an "accident" and Recuva saved me.
