Apple WWDC 2011

Keynote starts in under 1 1/2 hours.

Engadget will be liveblogging:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/w...ion-icloud-an/

Their attempt at a live video has apparently broken Ustream:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/e...ive-from-wwdc/
And we're done. Sorry for breaking UStream -- we'll have a saved version of the video up shortly. In the meantime, why not bookmark our liveblog of today's event?

Last year's WWDC thread, which ended up focusing mainly on the iPhone 4:

Re: Apple WWDC 2011

Leaked photo from WWDC seems to confirm that the 3 big topics will be:

OS X Lion (10.7)
iOS 5 (and/or iPhone 5?)
iCloud (or whatever it will be called)

Re: Apple WWDC 2011

Hopefully something more significant than cloud storage which is really......z....ZZzzzzzzzzz....oh sorry. Hopefully, Lion will the focus here.

I said earlier (and was scoffed at) that the next iPhone would not be called iPhone 5. Well, reports seem to indicate that it indeed won't be iPhone 5.

Rumors of "iPhone 4S" have been around for weeks, so I'm not sure why anyone would be scoffing at you at this point. I'm not eligible for an upgrade (at discounted pricing, of course) until September, so if there is a new model and not just a new iOS announced, the timing might actually be right for me, for once.

I don't think I have ever been less excited about an OS update, and the abandonment of Rosetta doesn't help matters.

Re: Apple WWDC 2011

I've read a lot on the iPhone 4S as well. Wouldn't be surprised if the big change is no home button, though I doubt it.

Yeah, I'm kind of amazed some of that stuff wasn't already in there. That said, Application resume is always nice. LaunchPad, the way they have it (background perhaps) is an eyesore.

Wait you mean Lion has nothing to do with iOS? At least it's cheap, though looking at it, it should be free.

Re: Apple WWDC 2011

looking at the way this is setting up.. i would guess ios5 and icloud will be the rest of the discussion

we knew ip5 wasnt coming this year.. and if there is a ip4s announcement.. i bet it doesnt come during this... dont want a hardware announcement to overshadow their pay cloud

most of the rumors ive ready about ip5s has just been updated processor, multi carrier support, and 8mp cam... no major improvements expected.

Re: Apple WWDC 2011

1. notifications - that was expected.. since apple hired the dude that put together the top jailbroken notification system

2. subscriptions.. meh.. im still not paying for magazines and newspapers on here

3. twitter - great, that much easier to tell us your sitting on the back porch doing nothing

4. tabbed browsing.. common sense addition, another jailbreak ripoff

5. reminders.. meh.. geofence is interesting.... can make it so when my kids leave a certain area, it notifies me?

6. camera easier to use?

Re: Apple WWDC 2011

So having Lion be available only via download is.. interesting. It sounds like it's a Mac App Store purchase, which can then be used on any Mac "activated" with the same account. No discs means much less casual piracy, like someone borrowing their friend's disc of the latest version to install. The lower price point seems like its in anticipation of additional sales. However, the 4GB size seems excessive for a download-only product. Some people may live where high-speed broadband isn't feasible, and so are essentially SOL in regards to this upgrade. Plus, it seems like you'd have to redownload it on every computer you want to upgrade.

The notification bar looks like a clone of Android's.

Twitter integration seems a bit much for one third-party service. Did Apple and Twitter make some kind of deal?

I wonder about that too. But Microsoft is doing the same for Windows 8.

Oh, those updates to the camera look really good.

I haven't actually made any purchases from the Mac App Store yet, but once you have it downloaded, isn't it just a regular application at that point? Couldn't you then copy it, burn it, etc., however you wanted to get it onto your other computers?

Although perhaps it requires some kind of authorization through iTunes to check that you are on the same account that purchased it originally. Don't know if App Store-purchased items have that kind of copy protection generally.
