The resolution isn't the draw. The appeal, such as it is, is that the TV is shaped so that scope movies will be displayed with no black bars. They just added pixels on the sides so that 16:9 material could still be shown at 1920x1080 with no stretching.

It seems a strange choice to give the TV the shape of the least common content though. The people that still really care about eliminating black bars generally do not tend to care about maintaining original aspect ratio, at least not so much that they would plunk down money for a 21:9 TV only to suffer black bars on the sides for most material. This just seems like a solution in search of a problem to me.

I like the idea of a 21:9 display. I think I'd prefer to windowbox 4:3 and 16:9 content rather than letterbox 2.35. It'd be cooler though if the panel itself were 3840x1632 or something like that. I think scaling could look pretty good and the extra screen area when window boxing could be useful for guide/internet stuff.

having both, i can say its not even comparable
having ATT service on my pad completely BLOWS.. the speed is TERRIBLE.
but verizon on the Q and then wireless tethering to my laptop.. my laptop blew away any connection speed i ever can get from ATT and I never had issues with the verizon service dropping as I was streaming movies while we were driving on trips..
I can barely walk with my ATT service without getting drops.. forget about driving around.

of course, as with most services.. its YMMV depending on service area

the new IPAD 2 (mock up)

slimmer, dual cameras.. and the bluetooth keyboard integrated into the case is an interesting touch.

I think those of us in NYC get spoiled with the coverage we have with ATT because everytime I go anywhere else, its a shit show with them...

AT&T upgraded the network here in the Bay Area and I don't know if they have the best cellular network, but it improved a lot.
The best test for me was going to Giants stadium and being able to use my iPhone, in the past I wouldn't be able to even make a call. Now I'm able to check the internet, using a 3G connection. It's slow there, because there are thousands of people using the network, but it works.

So, any ideas about the rumored Microsoft device?

I just can't think of something that really works. They already have the Xbox 360. They said it's something that will compete with AppleTV and the Roku. And that it will cost $200. That's too expensive, and again, they already have the Xbox 360.

So they want a multimedia device for the living room that can access Netflix, Hulu? and some more services, maybe even Microsoft's own entertainment site.

But still, I just can't see it. I guess I have to wait for tonight.

From that rumor before, sounds like a set top box running something akin to the pre-existing Windows Media Center. Probably with various manufacturing partners, similar to the way Google TV is. I don't see what's difficult to picture about it.

as said, if its 199.. wouldnt make much sense.. since you can get an xbox for that price
unless you dont have to pay for live service on it..
for 199 with lifetime 'live', i could see it being competitive

Those two statements don't compute for me. It won't be very competitive with those devices at that price...unless they have some serious content exclusivity or something.

Could be a DVR device too if it is based on MCE - would be nice to see some other options outside of TiVo (since they charge so much for service and hardware).

Anything new from Dish or DirecTV we can expect? Last year Dish unveiled their DVR 922. Other than that, looking forward to Verizon's 4G phones and the new tablet offerings.

As expected, just Xbox stuff, Kinect integration, Windows Phone, etc. Nothing exciting from Microsoft. But they usually don't show exciting things here, right?

Woah! Skype has just announced it will be purchasing Qik!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/s...o-acquire-qik/

This is after Skype has already demoed mobile to mobile video calling via the Droid Bionic.

Wandering the Central Hall right now. This place is a madhouse. The press conferences were ridiculous yesterday, expecially Sonys. I can't wait to strap a glowing "virtual boy" to my head and watch a movie.
