Just curious, if both sides are sporting a DSL or Cable connection, what's an average download time for a 4MB file?

(picked 4MB at random as an average size)

I normally DL on Napster at 20-30kb Anything less and I cancle it.
I wanted to make a cd will all of the songs on the Go movie (21 total), and it took me less than 25 min total to get them all.

I would think that I get a 4 meg song in just under a min. Have to love cable.

I usually get anywhere from 30-150 kb/s on my cable modem, if I hook up to a T1. I did see it hit 175 for a song two days ago. Probably around a 4 meg file in under 20 seconds.

Most of the time it seems like I get a better conncetion when I hook up with a cable person. Most of my T-1 DL's are slower than adverage.

I've had most downloads in the range of
75-180KB/s with some going up to 240KB/s, just depends on the person i'm getting it from

When I look for a song to the first thing I do is sort by speed. The UNKNOWN and 14.4's are usually the fastest connections. These folks like to keep a low profile with their ample bandwidth. Then right-click "view information" on the UNKNOWN user until you find one with a s*load of songs and not too many concurrent dl's. If it is truly a slow connection the user will not have many songs. You will find a lot of +100kb/s using this method.

I sort the list by connection type, if i dont get at least a 30 kbs i go to someone else.. i've found dsl connections are faster then cable for downloading. But if you get a real t1 or t3 things just fly. Keep in mind people lie about there speed (usually state faster) and never try dling from a sended using a modem...

so to sum it up, it usually takes a minute or two for a 4 meg file, and move on to a new download if it is going slow..

Edit: i have dsl...

Don't go by user speed, go by ping, the lower the ping the other user has, regardless of their connection, the faster you'll get your file.

not necessarily ... i've had a lot of pings in the 800-1000 range that DL at 30+ k/s, as well as pings of 20-30 that registered at 1 k/s ...

For a 4MB file? About 1 minute. DSL, roughly 75-100k/s

Depending the user and their connection - I usually download a typical 4MB file under 1 min (30-160kb/sec). The fastest I've downloaded was 445kb/sec from one user.
