I disabled wireless already (I don't use it 99% of the time, when I do I enable it for the period I need it, it does have a pw set), changed the default user id/pw, IP address, and made sure administration from the wan side is disabled.

anything in particular I should play with next? either for security or just to take advantage of the extra features?

Do you have any specific needs?

Personally I needed good QoS. I tried DD-WRT but it never worked to my satisfaction. The interface was clumsy and it was a lot of work to monitor what exactly was going on with the traffic. Switched to Tomato and have been very happy. DD has a lot more options in general, but for home use I found Tomato to be the perfect balance of features and usability.

no needs
my wrt54g was doing fine but a few weeks ago I found out linksys released the GL with the higher amount of ram and flash space specifically for people who wanted 3rd party firmware so I decided to get one and flash it just to do it

I do think I'll make use of the static dhcp though. I prefer my pcs to have static ips but it'll be nice to set the pc to be dhcp but still have it get the ip address I want

Re: So I got DD-WRT. Any particular settings I should mess with first?

I've been running DD-WRT for a few years on my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54.. I just realized I'm getting crap download speeds on my WIFI.. I have 10mb down and I'm only getting 3-5mb with my laptop and home PC but I get 10mb from my HTPC which is hard wired.

I'm not saying it's the DD-WRT firmware that's causing it but I went on their forums and posted and someone said the version I was running was the buggiest out (hadn't upgraded it in years).. They told me what one to try (very vaguely and without much help) and it didn't fix it so I'll give Tomato a shot..

I just downloaded the Tomato firmware and it says if you're running DD-WRT you can upgrade from the web UI.. I select the tomato.trx file but the UI says "Incorrect image file." when I try to update...

Don't know what to do now..

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r182...e-after-DDWRT-

It looks like you can just rename the file from .trx to .bin.

Or just flash it back with a Linksys firmware and then goto Tomato.

It's a Buffalo router, not Linksys, so it's more of a pain to switch from the original to a 3rd party.

Re: So I got DD-WRT. Any particular settings I should mess with first?

I got Tomato loaded.. Got my laptop connected with no problems.. Trying to get my office PC connected and can't.. It just keeps connecting, then disconnecting over and over and over.. Rebooted both the PC and router.. Same issue..

Tried assigning a static IP instead of DHCP, same issue..

When I go to Status > Device List in Tomato I can see the PC show up for like 3 seconds (doesn't show an IP), and then disappear.. It just keeps doing this and I can't get it connected..

Any ideas?

Thanks

Thanks much.. The font I was using to copy down the password had the capital I's and lower case l's looking exactly the same.. Changed it to Tahoma and was able to sort it all out..

I thought a bad password would give such an error message..

Thanks much!
