Re: Internet Explorer 8 Released

View any site with ease

Now you can quickly display websites that were designed for older browsers. If you’re looking at a page and the text or images aren’t lined up right, just use the new Compatibility View button next to the Refresh button on the Address Bar.
That seems strange, if they can get it to work after hitting a button why not just get it to work all the time?

Might just be a matter of flipping between rendering engines and there isn't a built in method to auto-detect which one to pick.

That said, it looks like you can add webpages to a compatibility list so they always open on compatibility mode.

The accelerators in IE8 seem cluttered and not very intuitive to set up.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 Released

I've been reading this review as far as features go - http://www.winsupersite.com/live/ie8_02.asp

I guess the Compatibility stuff does automatically check.

Compatibility Settings. IE 8 breaks with long-standing IE tradition and uses a standards-based rendering engine by default. However, this change means that IE 8, out of the box, isn't as compatible with existing web sites as it could be. To combat this problem, Microsoft created a new IE 8 feature, Compatibility View updates. It compares web addresses to a known list of misworking web sites and automatically puts IE 8 in a legacy rendering mode when needed, giving users the best possible experience. (That is, web sites should render correctly and you won't need to worry about the underlying rendering engine being used.) As with the SmartScreen Filter, this feature must communicate with Microsoft's servers to work effectively, and this could be a privacy concern. If you choose express settings, Compatibility View updates is enabled.

Not too interested unless it feels as light weight as Chrome.

meh.. a browser is nothing special anymore.. just your standard porn delivery system.. so many good options and nothing groundbreaking coming from any of them. (although ie6 was well behind the standard features from all the other options)

Having been using Chrome as my primary browser since release, these issues have been fixed for months now and I don't have any issues loading java, flash, or PDF files in Chrome.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 Released

I downloaded the default installer and it wouldn't install because I'm using Vista64. I'm downloading the 64 bit version now. It had better come with the 32-bit exe too.

EDIT: It does. Doesn't seem too different from IE7.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 Released

IE8 final seems to work just fine, like rc1. little difference between the two anyway.

I think the acid3 tests say Opera and Firefox scored much higher than IE7 yet IE7 seems more compatible. Why's that?

Because acid3 is based on The Web Standards Project. Websites don't have to follow that standard. Esp when they know that the vast majority of browsers in use are IE6 or 7. So they build their sites to work with IE browsers and now also with Firefox. But always with IE. If your website doesn't work with IE, you're going to lose a lot of your audience.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 Released

I just recently downloaded IE8 earlier today and so far it seems to be working good. I like it alot better than 7 because this one makes pages load faster (not that they didnt before..lol) so yeah I like it..it's alright by me.

But you used the word "meh" on only two of them, so I guess that means Firefox is the winner!

Re: Internet Explorer 8 Released

Most of web users use internet explorer. A lot of them also use firefox but IE still gets a bit of the upper hand. IE has turned itself into a ok/good browser.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 Released

I guess I haven't seen the problems with FireFox memory leaks, I really only run it for maybe 2 hours max at home. Though it is on all day at work, guess I'm not doing anything where it would cause a problem..

Actually, IE's market share is down to under 70%. Firefox has about 20% of the market, and Safari is around 8-10%.
