Microsoft has stopped automatically distributing a prerequisite piece of software for Vista Service Pack 1, following customer complaints that it had caused system problems.

Servicing stack update KB937287, released last week, contained updates to Windows Vista installation software, and was billed as being "necessary to successfully install and to remove Windows Vista SP1 (Service Pack 1) on all versions of Windows Vista."

Microsoft stopped distributing the update on Wednesday, according to a blog post by Microsoft product manager Nick White.

"We've heard a few reports about problems customers may be experiencing as a result of KB937287," wrote White. "Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes."

Vista SP1 is already available to subscribers to the Microsoft Developer Network but won't receive a formal public release until mid-March.

Extra: Florida allows teaching of evolution One irate Windows Vista Ultimate user replied to White's blog post, saying the prerequisite had corrupted a PC and resulted in the need to reformat the hard drive, with the resulting loss of all of the files and programs. When advised by an anonymous contributor of the System Restore option on the Vista installation disc, the Vista Ultimate user replied that the copy of Vista had been purchased and downloaded from the Internet, so there was no disc.

Two users complained that Windows Update prompted them to install the prerequisite, even after they had installed it.

Another user, S Marusic, wrote: "New Dell Inspiron PC stuck on the update loop as well. Any ETA from Microsoft on when/how to fix it? My client has valuable data that I need to consider stripping off the (hard drive) unless a patch/fix comes out soon...Help!"

According to Microsoft's White: "This problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances."

Tom Espiner of ZDNet UK reported from London.

I did some searches and did not see this posted but maybe it has alraedy.

I woinder if that means SP2 Vista is close to being released so I can get SP3 for XP?

Only the prerequisite has problems. SP1 isn't the problem.

I was stuck in the loop the other day (Sunday) for some time. It took me awhile to get the computer booted in some recovery mode. A system restore fixed my problem.

Yeah, I'm still reluctant to try Vista, feels like it could be the next Windows Me, which I skipped when I went from win 98 to win2k to xp.

Hope the sp3 for xp will be nice as the last one.

Maybe they'll use SP3 to cripple XP systems so we'll upgrade to Vista!

Yikes, I like Vista and i'm running SP1 without any issues. I like Vista, but MS sure does seem like they're shooting themselves in the foot time and time again with it.

Yeah, I was hesitant with Vista as well, but once I got to play with it for an extended period on a well-spec'ed machine I will have no qualms about building my new main rig with it.

Well, that explains the numerous toes and feet I see as I travel along I-5 in Washington.

It's interesting MS chose VISTA to be their new OS. Because the definition of vista, has all to do with sight, not functionality. Somebody in MS knew what they were doing when they came up with this name.

I did the update on 2 of our PCs, 1 laptop and 1 desktop earlier in the week. No problems for me.

It did take about an hour on each PC.

That is weird. Microsoft said they removed it, and I've seen a lot of complaints about it.

The Search option on the right side of the Start menu is removed.

Are you sure your SP1 update took? If you right-click on my computer does it show SP1 as installed? I'm using Home Premium, not sure if that would make a difference.

Who knows.

I'm using Business Enterprise and yes they are SP-1. Maybe they took it out in Home and left it there in business.

My bad, I see which search you are refering to now; I thought you were talking about the search on bottom of All Programs. Yes my search on the programs menu is gone, I never used it anyway and I did not realize that it was gone!
