Cross-linked mp3 library management?

I've amassed a lot of compilation albums over the years, like "100 Greatest Rock Guitar Solos," as well as numerous soundtracks that consist heavily of mainstream music like "Forest Gump".

The problem is that I also own most of the original artist albums from which those compilations were derived resulting in gigabytes of duplicate tracks.

I could solve this problem by trying to create a playlist for each and every album I own and then manually replace the duplicates with common links, but that'd be tedious and I hate the relying on the playlist paradigm.

What I want is a relational database of sorts that will manage albums separately, but also provide me with the option to "merge" common tracks when maintained on the PC. Uploading full albums to an mp3 player would spawn multiple copies of the song (since mp3 players are dumb) but optionally (and when applicable) one song could be linked to multiple albums. ID3 tags would be ignored until a track was exported and then the proper info would be filled in based on the export request.

Does such a thing exist? Doubtful, I'm sure ...
