What Programs do I NEED to keep in Windows XP ?

I have a 50 GB Hard Drive and 49 GB are used !!What Programs are essential to keep my computer running properly? There are tons of programs in the add/delete section in Control Panel, I just don't know which to keep or to trash. I also have Zune and Itunes, if that has anything to do with it. Thanks. If there is a list maybe that'd be great.

Why not just get a bigger hard drive?

ThaGoddfather 06-12-07 07:22 AM

I'm stuck w/ it. Laptop :hairpull:

Do you think a bigger one can't be put in a laptop? They can.
Check at a local computer store. Usually, if you buy it from them, they'll install it for you. They can transfer what's on your old one, to the new one too. They may have to order it though.
Good luck!

Or get something like this? http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita...1653884&sr=8-3

Removing programs from your laptop isn't really going to help with the overall space issue a whole lot.

Programs should not be taking up 49 gigs of memory. If that is the case you really need to go uninstall all that crap. It's hard to tell you want to uninstall since we don't know what's on it or how you use your PC.

Depends on what you're using I suppose. On my Powerbook, I'm down to 2 Gigs free out of 60. But 40 of that is Final Cut Pro Studio.

thanks

Ya but I doubt that's the case with the OP.

Dude, you need a bigger hard drive like 250 GB

Dan G 06-12-07 11:31 AM

Empty your recycle bin.

zuffy 06-12-07 11:32 AM

Probably too many music files in Zune and/or iTunes.

Altimus Prime 06-12-07 12:05 PM

Uninstall any programs you have but don't use any more, like games you finished.

But a bigger HD is the better solution. My old desktop had a 20 GB HD. My new one is 300! Not because I wanted one that size, that's just what it has.

And to think, on my first PC, the hard drive was a then-huge 1.6 GB.

Trying doing a search on your drive for files larger than, say, 100MB and see if you have any junk like .dmp files. You could also decrease the size of your recycling bin.

Would running CCleaner be an easy way to help take care of some of that stuff?

A friend of mine had a Dell laptop with a 40 GB drive in it. I just swapped it out for him with a 120 GB drive. Cost about $100.
