Install old HD in a new computer?` grandmother's E-Machine died after 3 years.

Can I just take the HD out of it and plop it into one of my unused computers and turn it on? Will windows run fine?

I guess what I'm asking is what is the easiest way to get all the files and programs, set up the same way, onto a new computer?

I've never tried it, but it may not work. The registry has all sorts of information about the hardware components, and I don't know if it would just recognize the new hardware and work. You may need drivers for the hardware in the other computer, and if it's Windows XP the product activation may tie it to the old system.

Do you know that the hard drive is still good? When it "died" it could have been a hard drive crash, although if it won't even power on it's something else.

Yes, the HD would be all right, but you might have to reinstall your Windows in order for it to run properly.

Yeah, you'll get lots of driver issues, even if it boots.

If you install the hard drive as a SLAVE drive in another computer, you will be able to read all the data just fine.

If you install it as a MASTER drive and try to boot windows in another computer, the hard drive controllers MUST be the same or you will boot to a STOP error or get an inaccessable_boot_device error.
