computer won't start up - can it be fixed?

When I start up my laptop inspiron 8100, I get this message against a black screen:

An unsupported memory module was detected
A bad or unsupported memory module was detected.
Please remove the unsupported memory module in Socket 1, nearest the center of the machine

Strike F1 to shutdown

I've never opened it up before and its primary use is surfing the web for business and word documents. I've got a lot of my important word documents on there and; At the least, can I repair it long enough to get my information off the harddrive?

many thanks for any help!!

try the obvious and replace the memory module it is not that hard

I can't remember on the 8100 where the memory location is. It is either under the keyboard or under a little panel on the bottom of the laptop (usually marked with an M)

Here is a general guide

Yeah, it's simple to change the memory. Even if there's a worse-case scenario where there is motherboard damage you can take out the hard drive and pull your files off onto another computer temporarily.
