External DVD Drives for Cracking Regional Codes

In my new Toshiba laptop I have a Matshita DVD drive, which apparently cannot be cracked by any regional code cracker, i.e. DVD Region+CSS Free, DVD43, AnyDVD, etc.
As I live part of the year in Korea and part in the US, many of my DVDs are both region 3 and 1.
Does anybody know if it would be a good idea to buy an external DVD drive to hook up to the computer, which can then be cracked by such software? If so, which DVD drives would work with said software?
Thanks for the help!
