Does this sound like a dead modem problem?

I have to go check out my mother-in-law's pc this weekend, and she's claiming when she plugs the phone line in the wall from her internal modem (yes, she's on dialup) all her other house phones go dead, and inbound calls get a busy signal.

Is this indicative of a bad internal modem? She's uses the pc infrequently, and this occurs even when the computer is off.

Weird.

Could be, although I've never heard of this. Then again, there are a lot of things I've never heard of.

Wouldn't hurt to take a spare modem, though, just to test your theory.
