Memory sticks...do they last?

I've never heard of any problems with memory sticks no longer working and I've had mine for about 4 years now, it's beat up, but it still works perfectly fine (sandisk).

Has anyone heard of these devices ever failing permanently? I'm about to buy a new one that has a "secure" feature that interests me and I'm trying to avoid online storage all together (which eliminates password protecting files...etc).

Everything fails at some point. What's your recourse if the flash drive fails? What if you simply forget to flush it before you disconnect it and the drive gets corrupted?
