Free Gaming Router (AKA Packet Shaping, all you need is a spare PC)

It's a stripped-down version of FreeBSD, designed for imbedded applications. This version is a ready-to-go NAT/Firewall, all you need is a spare PC (Pentium 133 or equiv and 64 mb of RAM) with two NICs. It can even work as a WiFi access point if you have a supported WiFi card. Setup and installation is very simple and once it's done it works just like any other off-the-shelf gateway router. (Simple, web-based GUI interface)

The best feature is the built-in Packet Shaping. Basically, after you set it up (via a simple Wizard) P2P apps and games get the lowest priority. If someone wants to surf the web while you play your game or the kids download their songs, it won't be slowed to a crawl.

Here is a great article to get you going: http://www.langamereviews.com/content/view/144/2/

I just set a copy up on my parent's home network. My brothers constantly tied our internet bandwidth up with P2P apps, online gaming, or both. Installation was a snap and it is working great, so far.
