Laptop's touchpad doesn't work for all apps

I just got this nice Gateway laptop the other day, and next to the touchpad, it has this cool "secondary" touchpad, that's actually a vertical strip. And you can use this strip to page up and down in windows. It's actually pretty cool, except it doesn't work for all apps.

Most importantly, the only web browser it works in is IE. I tried netscape, firefox and opera, and none of them respond to the "page down" glidepad.

I went to Symantecs site (it's their touchpad) and found a faq entry that said if it doesn't work in all apps, download the latest driver. Well, I did, and it didn't make any difference.

Has anyone else had this type of problem with touchpads? Is there any workaround? I really don't want to be stuck with using IE!
