Basic comp. rehab question

So I'm working with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+. The processor is showing its age when I game (specifically, HL2).

I've been planning on upgrading for a while. I have 1.5 GB of RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro, so I wouldn't need to upgrade these really, but I do want to buy a new processor, and of course a new motherboard as well.

So here's the question: if I buy a new motherboard and CPU, how easy is it to install into my case? Also, am I going to have to reformat my harddrive as well, or can I just connect the cables to the new mobo?

I think I'm going to go with the Athlon 64 3500+. That should give me a noticeable boost and set me up for another two years of solid though not extraordinary gaming. But if people have suggestions for a new mobo, or a CPU for that matters, I'm all ears.

Thanks for help & suggestions.

It's not physically difficult but you have to be a little careful. You should be able to find instructions online.

However with a new motherboard you probably will have to reinstall your OS for optimal stability. You don'[t need to reformat your drive but it may be the best thing to do.

What is your motherboard? You could consider overclocking or beefing up the CPU to the maximum that it can handle.
