Weird PC problem

I am running win 98 SE, I have updated antivirus, firewall, ad-aware, and spybot that I run frequently and I cannot seem to solve this issue.

My comp runs fine on start up, but after about ~ 30 minutes of being powered on and connected to the Internet, the unusual happenings occur. Here is what I have seen:

1) If I am on my desktop, I cannot open anything on it, ie files, folders, programs, start menu, task bar, etc.
2) I cannot right click at all, it won't bring up any menu
3) My CTRL and ALT buttions are disabled.
4) When I hit ALT+CTRL+DEL, it does not bring up the normal menu, it comes up with a white rectangular box which says "This system is dangerously low in resources! Would you like to terminate the following applications (program name)?" The options it gives are Yes, No, Cancel. No matter what you select, nothing happens, if you hit yes, the program will still be running.

Any ideas???

-Right click "My Computer"
-Goto Properties
-Check Performance
-System resources

If you check this every 5 minutes during the 30 minutes it takes to lock up your computer, do you see the resources going down?

If so what programs/applications are running that are killing the resources?

Well, rebooted the pc and it has been on for about 20 minutes and i havent been getting these problems as of yet. I checked my sys resources at 12:17am and comes up as 75%, I checked about 5 minutes later and went down to 66% but as of right now, it has been holding their for about 15 minutes.

Here is what is running

zlclient (firewall)
msnmsgr (msn)
mpbtn ??
motivesb ??
systray ??
rundll32 ??
enternet (internet connection)

The question marks I am not sure what they are used for. Also, I am running 256mb of ram

I remember I while back that there was a virus out there that would disable the CTRL ALT DEL key sequence! I don't recalll the name of the vrus/trojan/worm, though.

Scan your system for viruses! Online scanner is at the link below
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/hous...start_corp.asp

motivesb something to do with your ISP (Verizon)
mpbtn ISP Verizon?

Just a note System Resources is different than RAM. SR is always high!

I wondered if you had a memory leak or something that ate so many resources that computer finally would not respond. Nothing in HijackThis looks questionable, but there are only a few I know. And as you said the computer has been scanned by the best.

Postscript: Nice hockey stats.

tasklist /m /fi "IMAGENAME eq rundll32.exe" >C:\rundll32.txt
into the Start -> Run bar but nothing happend, a message came up saying "Cannot find the file tasklist (or one of its components). make sure the path and filename are correct and all that all required libraries are available"

I check out those 4 files and all of them are licensed from Microsoft, but Kernel32.dll is also in another location in

C:\Program Files\Motive\Profiles\Connection Manager 9xME\$(SYSDIR).

That is also licensed thru microsoft

I was looking for what dependency rundll32 was using but the command line didn't work for you. Are you still having the CTRL ALT DEL issue?
Otherwise your Log looks good

If "still happening" means the CTRL ALT DEL method to open the task manager, then open the registry via
Start>Run>type in regedit...

Navigate to:
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies

under policies, see if there ia a sub key named system.
Under the key, check for dword named "disabletaskmgr" without double quotes If is it is set to a value 1 change it to a 0 (the number). close the registry.

CAUTION: It is advise to export the key prior to making any change to the registry. You can do so via the file>Export option in the toolbar
