windows startup password

Hello, I bought a used laptop running windows 98 at a gargae sale, the owner did not know the start up password, I have been using it by hitting cancel at the prompt, the problem is if I want to use the network settings I cannot, can someone tell me if there is a way to reset this password? thank you

I believe you can just delete the *.pwl files. They should all show up in c:\windows

I agree that deleting the pwl files should work
I also think there are password crackers for win98 password

Just search the disk for a .pwd file. I think it should be hiding in the system folder, but I'm not sure. Then you just rename or delete the file and the password should be set to null.

If you ever lose your xp password, use the program from the link below to reset the password. You will lose any information in encrypted folders. The other option is to use a utility to grab the password hash and then crack the password. With some newer password cracking utilities it is often possible to crack a password in under 2 hours.
