Problem with my DVD Rom drive

Whenever I put in a CDR or DVDR and run movies or songs they tend to bleep and make all sorts of noises. If I copy the files to the HD they play fine, and if I put a CD in my CDWR drive and play a file it sounds fine. Anyone know how this can be rectified? I have a BenQ 16X48 DVD Rom with a region free patch. Thanks in advance.

Check to see if digital CD audio is enabled on your drive.

Do you have DMA enabled on your IDE connectors?

I think digital CD audio is enabled. Could that be it?

Not sure if DMA is enabled. I'll check when I get home.

Also, DVD movies work fine. I've also played games on it.

Try disabling it to see if it makes a difference. I'm not sure if you have to reboot for change to take effect.

That didn't help. I also rebooted just in case.

On my primary IDE Channel Properties it says

Current Transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2

Based on what you are saying, I would suspect corrupted drivers or a failing drive. You could try the drive on another computer to verify if thats the problem, or try another drive in your system and see if the problem continues.

Did this problem exist before you flashed the drive to the region-free firmware?

thanks for bringing that up toq, a bad firmware patch could definitely cause these symptoms, in addition to what I mentioned earlier. The quickest way to find out would be reflash with the original firmware from the manufacturer.

Couldn't be a failing drive since it's not so old and it did that even when it was still new.

firmware I'm using

RPC-1 (region-free) firmware v1.11 for Acer/BenQ DVP-1648A (Pioneer DVD-500M / DVD-118)
Created: February 11th, 2003 ...by: John Lee

New features (in v1.11 vs. the old v1.07):

DVD+RW support! This new firmware adds DVD+RW support to these DVD-ROM drives!
...and presumably adds improved DVD+R support also.

Included files:

500mx111.hex -- the RPC-1 (region free) firmware
acma111.hex -- the original (region-locking) firmware (for reference)
DOS1648A.EXE -- a newer version of DOSFLASH.EXE (v1.0 instead of v0.8)

Instructions:

Start your system under pure DOS. ( this tool can't work on Windows )

then run:
DOS1648A 500mx111.hex
...(if you want to use the region-free firmware)

or:
DOS1648A acma111.hex
...(if you want to use the RPC-2 firmware)

This modified v1.11 firmware (500mx111.hex) was created by John Lee, with a some help from Hijacker of www.rpc1.org ...

try another firmware version, maybe even something older. My NEC 1300 had trouble burning my Ritek discs with the latest firmware, but with 1.08 (an older version) they burn at 4x every time.

According to http://www.benq.com/drivers/storage_drivers.html the latest official driver is 1.07.

BUT according to http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=4 there's higher [non region free] versions.

Highest non-region free: 1.12
Highest region free: 1.11

When I had the region free patched 1.07 it could not read DVD+R. So I put the region free 1.11 to fix it. Therefore I don't think it's a good idea to get 1.07 from benq.com.

So how does this solution sound?:

Install 1.11 or 1.12 non-region free (maybe 1.11 since it's on Benq's European FTP)

See if it works.

If it works, then get the program DVD Region-Free (http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm) from "that BT site" to be able to play non-R1 DVDs.

If it doesn't work, uninstall DVD Region-Free and re apply the ver 1.11 region free patch again.

You mean how does stealing DVD Region-Free instead of buying it sound?

Well I'd have to get it to install it so I can use it as an alternative to firmware patches.

WOW! I updated ver 1.11 non region free and it seemed to have fixed the problem. Also reads DVD+Rs fine!!

The Manufacturer of the drive is now detected as: (Standard CD-ROM drives)

Now to (try and) get around the issue of not being able to play non-R1 discs!

Just downloaded and installed DVD Region-Free. Everything seemed to work well! It adds region free support to the drive AND the software player!! Not bad! I celebrated by watching Pecos Bill uncensored on the R2 Melody Time
