Microsoft is staffed by sadists

Short mini-Microsoft rant.

Part of studying for the MCSD exam involves learning how to use ADO.net - i.e., how to access databases in code. I figured I'd try the sample code in the Microsoft textbook on the topic.

So, in part of my code, I copy this straight from their textbook:

myConnection.ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; DataSource=database.mdb";

The problem is that whenever I hit this line, my code died with an exception reading, "Could not find installable ISAM."

Installable ISAM? What's that? Microsoft's help documentation on this error message indicates that I need some software (an additional Jet driver, or maybe the MDAC pack, etc.) So I spend an hour installing additional software - to no avail. "Could not find installable ISAM." every time.

I eventually tracked down the error. You know what's wrong? Their sample code is wrong. It's not "DataSource," it's "Data Source."

Of course, had Visual Studio coughed up a helpful error ("syntax error: 'DataSource'" or something), I could have tracked it down more easily. Noooo, instead I have to spend two hours installing software because their error message had nothing to do with the actual error - and the error came from their original text.

:bangs head on wall: Thanks a lot, billg.

If David was banging his head on the wall before, he must be going nuts trying to find this thread over in Tech Talk.

Reminds me of when I had the hardest time with a programming assignment for a class...turned out the algorithm the professor gave us was flawed and I couldn't figure that out because bounds checking wasn't turned on in the compiler.

You have to install SamIam. Not ISAM. That's the old 8-bit version (noted by only 4 characters). SamIam is the newer version.

Agreed. I discovered this thread because I did a search for thread in which I'd posted, and this thread popped up (with me as the thread starter!)

Mods, you can move it to techgeek talk.
