what has happened to my "my computer" windows?

I may post a screen shot if needed but don't have a good server to host it so hopefully my description will be enough.
first the background. I decided to attempt reinstalling windows 98se on top of itself. Got a blue screen after putting in the registration number. got into safe mode and copied the backup of the windows folder back and imported the backup registry. Booted back into windows and everything was like it was, except for one thing.
In the my computer window and any windows I open from there at the top left there is a large icon (a drive icon in the case of opening a drive, and a folder icon once I open folders), a line extends to the right from that icon and across the line is the name of the drive or folder. the normal file icons are below the line.
Any ideas?
I'll probably be uploading a pic but it will be to a geocities page which sucks for hosting pics

here's a pic, it's at geocities so you'll proably have to copy the url then add a space before pressing enter for it to load http://www.geocities.com/tatical15th...mycomputer.jpg

Maybe it's some setting in the folder options under control panel? Running any theme programs?

Have you tried changing the folder options (under the view menu)?

That's how Win 95 looks. Don't know a setting in '98 to make it look like that.

Maybe I'm missing something here but isn't that just the "web view" of the folder? Just right-click anywhere in an empty spot and uncheck View -> as Web Page.

Hope that helps.

now this is really odd. Unchecking "view as webpage" got rid of the icon and line, but it also disabled the preview pane
it used to be that I had the preview pane without the icon, na di think that was with view as webpage unchecked in the past. I do have the "view web content" option set to "for all folders with html content" which is how I've always had it
I think my attempted reinstall messed something up
