help my computer has been hijacked

Last night on a website I clicked on a link (not 1 of those grey boxes that ask you to click ok) that started automatically downloading and installing a bunch of different programs. I tried to stop it and began running spybot rightaway. By the time I went to bed I thought I had it fixed.

This morning I awoke to a loud knock at the door. It was the police saying they were continuously getting 911 calls from my phoneline.

I went straight to my computer and it had about 50 new icons on the desktop and some program called "Auto Dialer".

Is there any software that I can use to clean this all out of my computer without having to reinstall windows. (spybot is not cutting it or I'm not doing something right)

I'm running windows 2000

You can try running Adaware and an Antivirus if you have one, but if I were you i'd back up my data and perform a clean installation of the OS.

Crap, that's a new one. Be glad that it called 911 and not a 900 service.

Another reason to avoid shady porn sites and always have a HD w/ fresh installed OS cloned by Ghost ready.

That's a good idea. But do you really need a whole new HDD cloned ready to rock? I suppose that it's good for total redundancy if your HDD fails unexpectedly.

How about just reimaging the drive? That should take care of any spyware etc AFAIK.

The only problem with imaging/cloning is the human factor: how often/motivated is one to make backups?
