Urgent question about building my pc...

I have a 2500+AMD cpu, and asus mobo. I installed the cpu into the socket with no problem and when I tried to install the heat sink and fan, the 2 little metal clips that hold the heat sink down to the socket fit INCREDIBLY tight. (so tight that I was amzed) Everyting was aligned properly like the manual says it should be but I just want to be sure that this condition is normal

Yup - usually pretty damn tight - though I use the four screw holes for my fan....

OK! next question..after some trouble me and my dad got the basics installed: mobo, cpu, video card, etc.

I plugged the pc in, put the asus installation cd in the drive, turned on the power, and whammo the ASUS logo screen comes up.

then almost immediatly a bunch of crud pops up (it recognizes my HD, CDRW, floppy, ram, etc) and then at the bottom it says "Verifying DMI Pool Data....." and then doesnt do anything.

How long should I let it sit? Is it even doing anything?

Yes, it should be very tight. You dont want the heatsink/fan falling off. That wouldn't be pretty.

Isn't that what it does when no OS is installed? I can't recall exactly but recall it saying that when I first built mine and before I installed the OS.

If that is the case, just put the OS cd in the drive, set BIOS to boot the cd/dvd drive first and then install the OS. If not, then just ignore this with my apologies.

Make sure your Hard drive and CD drive are connected and all that jazz. When you boot it up, press the delete key repeatedly until you get into the Bios setup menus.

Find the menu that has your boot sequence (it should say something like first device=floppy, second device=hard drive, etc.)

Switch the first device to CDROM and Press F10 (or whatever command is "save and exit."

You need to install windows before that Asus cd comes into play at all. So grab your windows XP disc (I assume that is what you will use) and put it in the cd drive. From there on it should be pretty straight forward.

When you get to the desktop and windows is finished installing and all that junk, then put the asus cd in and finish installing those components.

Good luck!
