Annoying Crashes - please help!

First:

Windows XP (SP1)
AMD Athlon 1.1 GHz
512 MB RAM

Next:

I've been having the following error come up for a couple months now -

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Program: [current program name]
abnormal program termination"

This happens when attempting to refresh the directx plugin list in Cool Edit Pro 2.0, as well as during the loading of Adobe Premiere 6 (when it starts to load the plug-ins). In each case the program will not continue, and Premiere cannot even be fully started. I think I've narrowed it down to DirectShow, because when I run Dxdiag, it crashes, and the next time it opens says, "DxDiag has detected that there may have been a problem accessing DirectShow the last time this program was used...would you like to bypass DirectShow this time?"

I have downloaded the latest version of DirectX and nothing was solved. I've also read that in some cases spyware could be the cause, but I've run several eliminator programs and there's nothing on the computer.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there any way to repair DirectShow files? Thanks in advance, this is driving me crazy!

Have you tried updating the video drivers? Are you using the manufacturer's drivers or reference drivers? I've also read that the error may be related to the VIA 4-in-1 drivers as well.
