Power supply making loud noise

I am running Windows 98SE. Out of nowhere today, after about 20 minutes of use, what I think is the power supply starting making a loud, obnoxious, almost grinding sound. After turning off the computer and back on, it stops, only to resume after about 20-30 minutes of use. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks.

Most likely the bearing in the fan is shot. You'll need to replace the cooling fan in the power supply. It's very simple though. Buy a 80mm fan. Unplug the power cord and press the power button to remove whatever juice is left. Leave it unplug for a few hours or overnite if you want to be on the safe side. Open the unit, remove the fan and replace with new one. You definitely want to solder the wiring instead of just splicing. Make sure you use electrical tape to cover the splicing if you go that route.
