Looking at Windows XP Professional Full Version on pricegrabber, I notice that the price goes way cheap when it says (OEM). What is that?

Oh,
We left out the fancy packaging, since we sold this to an Original
Equipment Manufacturer.

Your answer is in there somewhere.

oem is the version sold bundled with a new computer
most computer parts stores will sell you an oem version if you buy a harddrive and motherboard together since that is a good indication you're building a complete system

that's how I got win98se new, full version for something like $50-60 about 3 years ago

A quick Google search turns up with this: http://peripherals.about.com/library...y/aa042498.htm

Although it's about OEM hardware, most of the points apply to software.

I'm curious about the OEM software too. With a win xp pro oem cd, would you be getting a valid license? Like can it be activated w/o calling Microsoft for a key code?

Its not illegal. As long as theres hardware. Thats why it ships with a piece of cheap or nonfunctioning hardware. They are sticking to the terms of the licensing agreement. Not illegal.

When I bought Win XP for my mom, it came with a CD-ROM audio cable. I've heard there are a couple places that consider a case screw to be hardware, which it is in one sense of the word.
