Can't Boot From Hard Drive

All of a sudden, my pc won't boot from the hard drive. I get:

"Searching for Boot Record from Floppy...Not Found
Searching for Boot Record from CDROM...Not Found
Searching for Boot Record from SCSI...Not Found

Boot Failure
Insert Boot Diskette in A:\
Press any key when ready"

The keyboard is non-responsive unless I go into the BIOS Setup, so I can't insert a boot disk and "press any key".

I have an IBM Deskstar 60 GB hard drive, AMD Athlon XP 1600 mhz processor, 256 MB DDR RAM, and Gigabyte motherboard with Award BIOS (all rather new).

I have the Boot Device order: Floppy first, IDE-0 second, CDROM third (as the motherboard manual recommends).

When I hook up an old hard drive running Windows 98, it at least begins the boot process. IS MY HARD DRIVE MESSED UP?

Thank you very much - Scott

I wanted the actual model number. They had a model 75GXP that is known as the "Deathstar" because so many went bad.

For a minute there, I thought I was being falsely accused of something.

Carry on.

First, put a bootable floppy in the drive before booting. If the computer won't boot from the floppy, try a bootable cd-rom. If those don't work, the problem may be motherboard related. If it boots, try running the IBM HD utility disk to check for problems. If you don't have one, you can download the files from IBM - LINK .
