PowerDVD problems on WindowsXP

I recently did a fresh install of WindowsXP Pro and PowerDVD XP (v4.0). For about a month it's been running fine. Then sometimes I would find that PowerDVD would crash upon trying to play the DVD, giving me that 'Do you want to send an error report?' message. Usually just rebooting the computer would fix the problem and all would be fine. But as of today (just when I buy my Get Carter 1971 DVD) PowerDVD has been doing this regardless of me rebooting. It happens without a DVD in the drive (usually when I go to the options screen) so it can't be a disc fault. I've reinstalled PowerDVD 3 times, and even tried version 3 of the program, but that does the same thing. Strange.
So I installed an old version of WinDVD 2000 and that's running the DVD's fine.
I'd much rather use PowerDVD though.

Anyone heard of this happening before?

Thanks in advance,
fmian
