Windows ME: program icon "problem"

I have a sneaking suspicion that this must be a pretty common "bug" but my (admittedly dilatory) research hasn't yet thrown up a solution....

.... instead of the "proper" program icon, I see what looks to be a notepad with a seal in the bottom righthand corner apparently sitting on top of the real icon - I can see bits of the real one at the edges.

This has happened with a number of programs where they were sitting - for a while at least - on my desktop after installation.

FYI I already rightclicked the icon and checked out "properties" then "change icon" but it didn't help: the correct icon was showing and changing back and forth made no difference. The problem seems to be deeper seated.

Is there a tried and trusted registry hack? Or a page that talks about this kind of thing someone can point me to?

Thanks in advace!

The Microsoft download TweakUI has an option to "rebuild icons". The help says to use that when explorer shows the wrong icons.

You could try that... it might help.

Or, you could find the hidden file named ShellIconCache in your Windows folder, delete it, and reboot.

Thanks guys!

joeblow69, ironically enough, I have pointed people in the direction of tweakui before now! (I didn't even know what the option you mentioned was for )

Mr_Shred, I followed your suggestion and.... it worked!

Thanks again to both of you!
