Re: CNN+ streaming service

I don't know if I want this. $3 a month isn't much (and it's a significant discount for sure), but I'm not such a news junkie that I really need this as well as all the other services I get.

They're more or less doing news the old traditional way, with lots of stories about lots of different topics, unlike, say, the network channel, which focuses primarily on one or two issues all the time (e.g., Ukraine, Trump, COVID). Another cool thing is that their daily shows don't have a time limit. One day it could be 20 minutes long, the next day 45 minutes, depending on what's being discussed.

I agree with DJariya though, that unless you're a news junkie, this is probably a pass. But I'm pleasantly surprised to say that the material on CNN+ is a little less partisan than what we see on the CNN network. It still leans left for sure, but it looks (for now at least) that the new head Chris Licht is trying to use the platform to return CNN to the "hard news" days of its past.
Sounds like you have to pay for the privilege of getting straight news, otherwise you're subjected to their "talking head" bullshit on their cable channel.

CNN is OK, their Ukraine coverage has been excellent, but they purposely went out of their way to remove Android and Android TV support, going so far as to remove Chomecast capability.

The previous Chromecast support was purposely removed so no more TV support on Android platforms.

Well, take what I said with a grain of salt. A week in, and I can already see them going back to the old "talking head" lean hard-left stance in many of the new programs. I guess they haven't learned anything. For a few days though, it was refreshing.

Fewer than 10,000 people are using CNN+ on a daily basis two weeks into its existence, according to people familiar with the matter:

I mean, I have it but I don't watch it every day - a couple times a week. So I don't really know what 10,000 means in this context.

Last thing I watched was a brand-new 45-minute interview with James Cameron, so that was worth this month's $2.99.

Re: CNN+ streaming service

Until they offer me a way to put it on one of my Android TV/Chromecast equipped devices it’s not like I can watch it anyways. I don’t understand how they can ignore such a huge streaming platform and expect to be a successful service?

CNN+
Just three weeks after launch, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to suspend external marketing for their CNN+ subscription streaming-news service according to sources for Variety.

The decision makes the task of luring new subscribers to the service far more difficult. None of the CNN+ shows have been cancelled, but the trade indicates essentially everything at the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery is under review.

Re: CNN+ streaming service

You mean they don't expect new subscriptions to take off after they double the cost next week?

Re: CNN+ streaming service

Grand opening! Grand closing! But really, it makes way more sense to just fold that content into HBO Max. (Though I'll be miffed if the monthly cost rises because of it; Back when I had YouTube TV, I hated it when they'd justify price hikes by the addition of channels I wouldn't ever watch.)

If it's your thing, more power to you, but I can't imagine paying good money to watch Brian Stelter. The same with doing so for Sean Hannity on Fox News' app. Cable news is a cancer.

I wonder how much Chris Wallace will get paid in this circumstance. If it's a fraction of his contract, he must feel like those Gov. Whitmer "kidnappers" who plead guilty before the trial.

Re: CNN+ streaming service

I expected this to happen but not that fast. CNN+ should have been a hub for HBOMax. And really, HBOMax should have been renamed to WB+ and include everything under the WB umbrella such as Cartoon Network, Boomerang, the full library of TCM, DC (and their comics hub like it was on the previous service), HBO, Cinemax, CNN, Cartoonito, Adult Swim, TBS/TNT originals, etc. Instead, they had splintered all these services through different subscriptions, many of which later licensed their content to other streaming services like Netflix and Peacock.

Re: CNN+ streaming service

Even though I thought CNN+ was a stupid idea from the get go from one of the most stupid people in the business (Zucker), I wished it didn’t end abruptly like this because there’s lots of people who relocated and left jobs to join this venture. Also, I hope the powers that be at Discovery know the impact of this decision as right wingers and racists are already running with the lines that this happened because CNN is going to be shut down because of Trump, etc, etc. This move tarnished the reputation of CNN itself at a point in history where anything and everything is being used to attack credibility and rights. Discovery ain’t running reality shows anymore. They are in the big leagues now so they need to understand the consequences to abrupt actions like this

Re: CNN+ streaming service

Wow, that got killed off quickly, was just coming here to post about the announcement I just saw on CNN. It seemed like a marginal idea at best given the availability of the regular service and their phone app. Wonder how much they blew on this endeavor.

Re: CNN+ streaming service

I spent the $3 for the month they were in business and tried a few of their exclusive news shows. It was fine, but I can understand they Discovery pulled the plug. It was a really tough sell from the get go. I think a news/documentary streaming service was never going to be profitable. I do hope they Discovery migrates the CNN catalog content they pulled from HBO Max and brings it back there. I read it might be possible for some of the new CNN+ content to live on with say HBO Max, but we'll see. They announced that the staff they hired are either going to be laid or given opportunities for other positions within CNN or the corporation.

Re: CNN+ streaming service

I hurried up and cancelled by subscription. My next monthly charge was due on 4/28 and with the service running until the end of the month, I wouldn't put it past Warners/CNN to charge me $2.99 for the final two days of April.
