Haileywood

A podcast about when Bruce Willis decided he wanted somewhere to live so he bought a town.
Looks like 8 eps and eprecemtly wrapped up.

What Were They Thinking?
A couple of guys talk about truly awful movies but full disclosure they may love these movies.

You Must Remember This

You Must Remember This is a storytelling podcast exploring the secret and/or
forgotten histories of Hollywood's first century.
It's the brainchild and passion project of Karina Longworth
(founder of Cinematical.com, former film critic for
LA Weekly), who writes, narrates, records and edits each episode.
It is a heavily-researched work of creative nonfiction: navigating through conflicting
reports, mythology, and institutionalized spin, Karina tries to sort out what
really happened behind the films, stars and scandals of the 20th century.

This is a one woman operation that is a very deep dive into Hollywood lore.
Its another podcast I have a hard time listening to because of the voice, the cadence of the host.
Very stilted. Very stiff.
Ive heard this woman on other shows and she speaks normally there so I don’t know why she speaks so robotic on her podcast.

Also Galaxy Brains with MST3K’s Jonah Ray has stopped producing new shows.

Fairly recently discovered No Such Thing As A Fish, and am now listening from the start.

It’s a weekly podcast of four British comedians/researchers for a quiz show, where they each bring their most interesting fact of the week and then riff off of it. They keep to a set format, about 10 minutes per fact, nice and tight. And each episode I both learn new things and laugh out loud.

I've just started listening to a great podcast about movies, called "The Movies That Made Me." (No connection to the Netflix show with a similar title) It's hosted by screenwriter Josh Olson (A History of Violence) and director Joe Dante. They have a guest each episode who is in the business--actors, directors, writers, critics--and their guest comes prepared with a list of movies to talk about. They don't talk about the guest's own movies/work, but about the movies that were influential to them. Olson and especially Dante are very knowledgeable about a wide variety of different types of films and are not film snobs at all. They are just as happy--if not happier--talking about B-movies as they are more high-brow stuff (Dante, of course, is best known for genre films like The Howling and Gremlins). Olson takes on the bulk of the back-and-forth discussion with the guest, while Dante just chimes in from time to time with interesting behind-the-scenes information about certain movies or people.

The conversations are lively and fun, but blissfully not overly 'jokey' like some other movie podcasts. You really get a sense of Olson's and Dante's love of the history of Hollywood and their appreciation of the people who pour their hearts into making movies.

I've listened to 10 episodes so far and I've got a growing list of movies to watch based on their discussions.

I've caught up with all the back episodes of this podcast now and just wanted to point out that these guys (they also run the Trailers from Hell website) have lists of all of the movies discussed in each episode of their podcast up on the Letterboxd site: https://letterboxd.com/trailersfromhel/lists/

Another podcast I've just discovered this past week is "Smartless." It's hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. Each week they have a different guest--often a big-name actor or director, sometimes famous musicians, athletes, politicians. And they just chat with them about whatever, it's pretty informal. The hosts are all good friends with each other and they are pretty funny together. They started the podcast about a year and a half ago. It's fairly light, but interesting and entertaining.

I've just recently been listening to Blank Check (they did a crossover episode with Roman Mars from 99% Invisible and that made me want to hear more of them). I started back at the beginning when they were just going through the Star Wars prequels and doing ~10 episodes for each prequel movie, and I'm just now getting to where they start doing series of episodes for different directors. I enjoy Griffin's humor--it's more conversational and doesn't make me feel like I'm watching a bad standup comic act (like How Did This Get Made? does). And, so far, it seems like they do their homework and the show is pretty informative about the movies they discuss.

Cryptoland, the new podcast from PJ Vogt, is fantastic. I'm not sure if it's intended to be a limited series, or ongoing, but I've thoroughly enjoyed every episode.

I searched for it and at least in Apple podcasts I didn’t see it.
Who is Vogt?

PJ Vogt was one of the hosts of Reply All, but he was cancelled due to his not approving of a union formation at Gimlet Media. He and a Reply All reporter did a couple episodes of Bon Appetite's workplace issues and he was called out for causing similar issues at Gimlet for not supporting the union that was forming. He left Reply All after that and is working on that new podcast Crypto Island. Crypto Island is on Apple Podcasts. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas...d/id1614253637

Shoot, you're right. Crypto Island. I mixed up the name.

Also, I never actually listened to Reply All. I heard it has completely fallen apart since he was more or less forced out, though. Regardless, Crypto Island rules.

I haven't listened to Reply All since he left. It is ending this month though. The first 150 plus episodes with PJ and Alex are fantastic. I highly recommend them.

I was thinking about going back and listening to older ones and working my way forward until the Bon Appetit nonsense. Based on my satisfaction with Crypto Island, and your recommendation, I'll be doing that sooner than later.

Let me know what you think. The PJ and Alex episodes are some of the best podcasts that I have ever listened to. I learned a lot about many different things and it's very entertaining too. PJ and Alex had great chemistry.

Four episodes into Reply All, starting from the beginning, and I'm loving it. This is right up my alley. The first one was just ok, but 2,3, and 4 are great stuff.
The only nitpick, and it's minor, is the old-ass ads that still play through the episodes. Luckily they're easily skippable.
The episode on the Figure 1 app (app doctors use like instagram to share gruesome photos) was wild.

I'm glad that you're liking it. It only gets better from there. I'm surprised that the old ads are still on there though.

I'm going to start Crypto Island tonight.

I started Crypto Island and I'm really enjoying it. I also started Pod Meets World, a Boy Meets World rewatch podcast with Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle. I'm really liking it so far. Boy Meets World was one of my favorite shows growing up.

^ yeah, I just caught up on the most recent episode of Crypto Island from a couple weeks ago, and it's another excellent one. Really enjoyed the interview with the guy who manages some celebrities, and hearing that clip of Quentin Tarantino in particular talking about this stuff was super cringe.

I was wrong about the old ads on Reply All  I just assumed some of the ads were old, but then I heard one or two that were definitely more recent.

I’ve probably mentioned this one before, but one of my favorite podcasts continues to be Mick Garris’ Post Mortem. He interviews cast and mostly directors of mostly the horror genre, but the discussions cover all aspects of film and filmmaking. He’s a great interviewer.
