The Criterion Channel -- streaming service

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
That’s not true. The Criterion Channel doesn’t have all of the in-print Criterion disc releases on the service at all times, but the “Criterion Editions” that are on the streaming service at any given time have all of the extras from the disc releases and sometimes additional extras that were produced more recently. It also has lots of “talking about various movies” content that isn’t available on any physical format. I still buy Criterion discs, because as others have said, it’s not a replacement for that, but as a movie lover it’s easily my favorite streaming service.

Though there’s no 4K content yet, they use adaptive streaming up to 1080p @ 5Mbps which is a higher bitrate than most streaming services:

Edited to add: I can’t say how many movies have 5.1 audio on the service currently, as I don’t think the app has had the capability very long. I would expect more to be added in time though now that it’s supported.

New section being added in August. The titles are pretty common, though, but so suppose it’s a start.

Criterion Channel Announces New Anime Section Coming To Service in August
https://www.endlessmode.com/anime/criterion-channel/criterion-channel-announces-anime-section-streamin-august
Last week, The Criterion Channel announced that the streaming service will receive a new Anime section in August, alongside the arrival of several classic films. Specifically, it will feature Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell (1995), Madhouse’s Redline, Satoshi Kon’s Paprika, and the cult film Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat In Space.
Currently, the streamer has six anime films: Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation’s brilliant coming-of-age film, Liz and the Blue Bird, alongside Makoto Shinkai’s two oldest features, 5 Centimeters per Second and The Place Promised in Our Early Days, alongside three of his shorts.
Of the four movies added, Paprika is a very understandable choice due to its popularity among cinephiles. Satoshi Kon has often been described as one of the most talented anime film directors of all time, with movies like Inception and Black Swan drawing clear inspiration from his oeuvre. Meanwhile, Ghost in the Shell has a similar degree of influence over culture, with the Wachowski sisters describing it as a strong influence on The Matrix films.
While Redline is a slightly more surprising choice, its visual creativity makes it a maximalist treat. Lastly, there’s Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat In Space, a deep cut that follows an anthropomorphic cat in a cyberpunk world. It will be interesting to see if the inclusion of these films is a small blip on the service or if Criterion will continue to add more anime films down the line.

The John Woo collection is on Criterion channel. It looks like they’re the new Shout! Remasters as the Shout studios logo appears before it.
Currently watching Bullet in the Head. It looks really good.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Criterion Channel has another BF sale.
25% off for 1 year like before.
My current subscription was going to renew for the full $99 for another year, but I cancelled and will use a different email to get the new discount.
I know this isn't a very popular service in this forum, but they get some quality catalog titles and a lot of classic films. It's totally worth the $75 for a year.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
I guess I’ve said it here before but the Criterion Channel is easily my favorite streaming service and is well worth the full price, let alone a BF sale price. It is so much more than just the Criterion/Janus catalog for streaming. It’s like a constant, amazing film festival in my living room that rotates in everything from obscure silent films to critically acclaimed Hollywood fare. I realize that wouldn’t be appealing to everyone, but if that sounds like your thing, it’s a no-brainer.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
I signed up for it last year but as time went on I found less and less that I wanted to watch. I have a large collection of Criterion DVD/Blu-ray so maybe that factors into it. But I was underwhelmed by a lot of the collections they presented, like the Sammo Hung-directed films, Argentinian collection or ones I’ve seen like the Altman collection. I guess it’s ok for a couple movies a month though at that price. Decisions…

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Oh well… I had to do it. I justified it by thinking what would I miss more, $75 or an occasional selection of good movies.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
The channel has actually saved me money in the long run. I still buy a crazy amount of physical media, but if something is a one time watch, I need it to be cheap. I’ve been able to watch a lot with my subscription that I otherwise would have paid money for.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Yeah there are definitely some Criterion movies that are only 1 time watches. Thats why I’m pretty selective on what I want to own.
I recently watched When We Were Kings, the Ali and Foreman boxing documentary, and it’s an excellent documentary. But it has IMO no replay value. So Criterion channel saved me $20 from owning it and never watching it again.
