Re: DC Universe streaming service

Krypton season 2 was just added. I never finished it once SyFy cancelled it.

I guess I'll just wait until this makes it's way to HBO Max.

My curiosity though is about the timing of its demise considering some of us have time left in our annual subscriptions and what will happen to the money we've already spent.

I wonder about the legality of just keeping it open while people have subscriptions but disallowing any renewals or new subs. Like keep the content as is, but basically put everything on Max anyway (BTAS, Titans, Young Justice, etc.). That would tick me off as a Max subscriber but I wonder if there's any recourse about false advertising in basically keeping a service on life support like that.

I don't think you can just keep it "open" There's licensing fees involved with all the content. When it gets consumed, someone has to get paid. I don't think they can do that for a dead service.

They are more than likely just going to have to segue all that video that can be licensed to HBO Max.

I don't mean from the licensing standpoint, I mean from the consumer standpoint. If you have a service and leave it "dormant" without exclusives, is that some sort of breach of contract? Obviously they'll pay the licensing fees, which should be covered by the subscription cost.

I just don't think they can easily convert people over to HBO Max since some of us already get it for "free" with other services. Maybe a refund?

Re: DC Universe streaming service

All DC Universe originals and content will officially be moving to HBO Max according to Jim Lee. DC Universe will be changed to a Comics/Community platform.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/he...comics-1307413

What is going to happen to DC Universe?

The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max. Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The amount of content you get, not just DC , but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.

In regards to the community and experience that DCU created, and all the backlist content, something like 20.000 to 25,000 different titles, and the way it connected with fans 24-7, there is always going to be a need for that. So we’re excited to transform it and we’ll have more news on what that will look like. It’s definitely not going away.

Re: DC Universe streaming service

When DCU goes all comics are they going to be lowering the price?

A lot of the shows on DCU were in 4k/HDR so I'm hoping that means 4k sooner rather than later on MAX.

Nobody knows. I mean what's the going monthly price that's reasonable for a digital comics service?

It's not only the 4k, DCU also works on... Roku and Fire TV.

Well, the Roku is the main issue- you can sideload the Android TV app (I know it's too complicated for a lot of people) on the Fire TV and it works fine.

US ComiXology Unlimited is $5.99/mo., but of course it’s not an exact comparison. I don’t know how the number of titles compares, but CU offers a 10% discount on purchases from participating publishers, which I probably use more than the free reading.

Wonder what will happen to the remaining months for those of us on annual subscriptions.

I bet we'll get the equivalent in months on Max.

But I already get Max for free...

I mean they're supposedly still keeping the service around for the comics, if they lower the price I'm sure they'll pro-rate it somehow (or refund).

Already have the MAX add on for DC Universe through the remainder of my annual DCU subscription. So depending on how they prorate the costs it is likely to not be in our favor.

Re: DC Universe streaming service

I enjoyed the service for the few months I had it. There just wasn't enough content to justify me keeping it.

Re: DC Universe streaming service

The corporation views HBOMAX as a key component of their business going forward. It was nice while it lasted but I never really expected DCU to survive from the start. The media landscape is changing too much and that was before Covid-19 cut severely into revenues.

Re: DC Universe streaming service

Just cancelled but still waiting for email verification. I was due to renew in May 2021 so wonder if I will get pro-rated refund? Sad news, but the moment content like Stargirl and Doom Patrol ended up on network TV and HBO Max respectively it was a service I did not use. I never watched Harley Quinn, Titans, Young Justice, etc., or used the comics section so other than Doom Patrol, Stargirl, and an ep or two of Swamp Thing I had watched I was overdue and a bit remiss in having let the service renew in the first place.

Maybe I will miss a bit of T&A when Swamp Things shows up on Network TV and I can finish the show up but I can live with that.

ETA: The ire Gizmo directed towards this service was just plumb strange and I almost want to ask him/her to point out on the doll where DCU hurt him. Anyway, since I get Max for free I still get to enjoy DCU originals so it is all good.

ETA: Hmmm....I may need to hit customer service again to find out if they are going to refund any of the renewal fee as I only kept the service for 3 out of the 12 month renewal period. So far no email confirmation of my cancellation has shown up in my in-box (or junk/spam) folder.

Re: DC Universe streaming service

It is unfortunate that DC Fandome was not streamed via DCU or at least replays after the event.

Not surprising though as they are winding down this service and moving some stuff to HBO Max.
