I sure wish the situation weren't true. My Apple TV is getting a little long in the tooth, but I'm equally perturbed that Apple is trying to enter deals with cable companies. I think they'd better serve cord cutters by putting OTA DVR capabilities in the thing.
Here is my long rant about the Apple TV: I like my ATV3 and I think it does a great job for me since I can't use the set-box to its fullest anyway. I stated before in this thread that my reason for owning it was because I watch US content for Hulu+ and Netflix. I also have a subscription for the WWE network and a great deal of digital movies and TV shows thanks to my Blu-ray purchases. Since most of the other network apps require a cable/satellite verification, they are useless to me. The ATV allows you to set up the DNS to change regions very easily compared to the Roku set-boxes. The issues that I have been noticing has been in regards to the app themselves most specifically the Netflix app which I use a lot. I think the Netflix app on the ATV is half-assed compared to the Roku for example. The whole issue of not having 5.1 sound after the OS 6.1 update for months and Apple and Netflix not doing anything about it plus getting features that have been present on the apps in other set-boxes long before and we are just getting it now, it's ridiculous. I just read recently that the Roku Netflix app got an update making it "faster". Plus I think they have something called DD 5.1+ for sound too. I know Apple is there to push their products (iTunes for example) but they should make more of an effort with their app makers to optimized their apps to the fullest. I also would like a subscription type of service for movies, TV shows and music (which I'm hoping this become reality with the purchase of Beats). |

That is most likely a problem on your end
I have no issues streaming anything else through the AppleTV, so it's not a connection issue between the AppleTV and the router. I've never had problems streaming anything with my computer, so it's not a connection issue between the computer and the router. That leads me to believe that the connection between the AppleTV and the computer should be good. No changes are made to restore connectivity other than closing itunes and reopening. When I first purchased the AppleTV, it worked with no issues. After one of the updates, I started experiencing the problems. It appears there are several others who have the same problem, starting with the same update. |

I love my Apple TV! :)

I like the way the apps look on the Apple TV after the update. I think the "flat" look works better here than on the iPhone or iPad.

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
So my ATV has been updated to 7.0.1 and it seems that the iTunes TV shows app has gone missing. It shows Movies, Music, Radio, Computer and settings but where the heck is TV now? Is it just me?

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Hope they can add Nick Reboot at some point as a channel.
|
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
The ATV has updated the YouTube app and has a few new apps: The Scene, UFC, DailyMotion and Fusion.
Apple needs to steps up and introduce more worthwhile apps if they want the ATV to compete with the other streaming devices. |
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Without an App store the Roku 3 really blows it away.
|
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Yeah, if it was easier to change the DNS on the Roku, that's what I would be using instead of the ATV. However, being part of the Apple environment lessens the blow a little bit...

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Looks like Apple is developing Reverse Airplay. I'm not sure how useful that would be.
Apple Patent Details Reverse AirPlay Mirroring Imagine a future where the Apple TV streams content via AirPlay to mobile devices. An Apple patent titled "Displaying a synchronized instance of content on a portable electronic device" explains this very process in detail. Normally, content is sent from an AirPlay enabled app on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to the Apple TV. The patent explains the reverse of this process, with a fixed display system such as the Apple TV feeding synchronized content to the portable device. The iOS device viewing the content would automatically determine if the content being streamed is compatible and can be viewed. If so, the content would be synchronized and delivered via AirPlay on a Wi-Fi network. FULL ARTICLE - http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/974128 |

It'll be useful when an actual Apple TV comes out, Samsung is doing the same thing with their sets.

i can stream content from my iPhone 6 via WiFi to my Sony Bravia via HDMI cable? thanks. First, you want this one: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-TV-MD199.../dp/B007I5JT4S -- It's $13 cheaper w/ an HDMI cable, all Apple TVs come with a remote. The one you linked to is a ripoff. Second: The Apple TV hooks into your Bravia via HDMI Third: Connect Apple TV to Wifi, Connect iPhone to Wifi, Mirror/Stream to your hearts content. |

$69 is a great deal but I want the updated one, so I will continue. At this point I'm thinking it will be released in the fall. I can wait.

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
What all features are people expecting on a "new model" of the Apple TV? I've always thought the device works well enough (AirPlay specifically) but was never a fan of the Netflix interface and (obvious) exclusivity to iTunes. But I am curious whats missing from the current version (It's been what, close to 3 years now? It has to need a refresh soon.)
|
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
i got it specifically for airplay to play videos off my ipad/iphone. i don't subscribe to any video services and the only apps ive ever opened on it is youtube and trailers.
still completely satisfied for airplay alone. i'd only wish for local storage which i'm sure is never gonna happen. |

I'd also like to see the ability to attach a webcam for Skype/Facetime video chat. Maybe add Siri voice control. And a Universal Search would be great. They'll definitely need hardware upgrades for 4K streaming. And until they offer Amazon Prime and Vudu, they'll always be stuck in 2nd Place behind the Roku. |
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Yeah, I was always curious if they were going to go the App Store route, but it seemed unlikely since it would be difficult to keep it iTunes exclusive like it is now (They'd almost have to allow Vudu, Cinemanow, Amazon, etc; on board). Skype/Facetime makes sense.

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
oh, if you missed the apple event today, they announced this HBO Now service:
HBO Now: "A stand-alone streaming service: HBO Now. Apple is the exclusive partner at launch." "Coming in early April for $14.99 a month. All original programming, past, present and future. No cable or satellite subscription. Just broadband connection and Apple device." First month free....In time for Game of Thrones premiere |
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
I'm thinking that HBO Now is for US residents only. I wonder if I can subscribe to it like I do for Hulu Plus?

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
You'll be paying about $18.90 CAD, man! That's a bit much for HBO NOW, isn't it?
|
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
I have to see if it's going to be worth it for me. Right now the only shows that I watch are Game of Thrones and True Detective.

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Yeah I understand. I was just joking about our joke of an exchange rate. :)
I'd consider giving it a shot if I had an ATV. Since I don't, I'll wait three months. I'd love to sign up for a couple months and binge-watch a ton of shows, but HBO NOW isn't a subscription I would keep active throughout the year, personally. I get more out of Hulu Plus right now. Oh, and HBO Canada is owned by Bell & Shaw (of course...), so I don't think we'll get a proper Canadian version of HBO NOW for years, if ever. Or it'll be tied to a "premium edition" of CraveTV or SHOMI or some bullshit. |
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Yeah, I have been getting my money worth with Hulu Plus even with our poor exchange rate ;)
I don't think we'll ever get HBO Now app but I have been thinking getting the Sling Dish and getting rid of Rogers cable. I heard that it works with Unblock-us. |
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Sign up on your Apple TV, iPad, or iPhone and get the first month for free. You can often pick-up iTunes cards at 20% Off. If they'll deduct from credit, that'll bring the monthly price down to $12. |

How does this usually work? Is it handled through iTunes billing? If you have credit on your Apple account, will iTunes deduct from the credit or bill your credit card in full?

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
i have a feeling billing will go through HBO.
For the first 3 months, it will only be viewable on AppleTV and iOS devices. floodgates open after that. |
re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Apple said to introduce a subscription TV service before the end of this year. However, people expect the price to be in the $30 to $40 range per month and NBC is not one of the TV networks that would make their channel available.

re: The Apple TV Device Thread
Lots of rumors going around that the next gen AppleTV will be announced at WWDC in June. Along with the obvious hardware upgrades (more power/storage), there's expected to be Siri voice control, an App Store, and support for home automation devices.
Here Comes The Long Awaited New Apple TV Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that the subscription internet TV service Apple’s been trying to get off the ground since 2009 appears to be finally headed to market. And now sources familiar with the company’s plans tell BuzzFeed News that a successor to its dusty and recently discounted Apple TV set top box is headed to market as well. Apple intends to show the device off at its annual World Wide Developers Conference in June along with a long-awaited App Store and a software development kit to help developers populate it. Sources say Apple’s new Apple TV is a significant overhaul of the device, one intended to undergird Apple’s vision of what the TV viewing experience should be, and to raise the table stakes in a set-top box market cluttered with barely differentiated devices from Amazon, Roku, and others. If I’m understanding the company’s strategy correctly, the new Apple TV isn’t just a play for a stake of the streaming TV market, but for the mythical digital living room. Think TV, music, apps and a little bit of home automation as well. As for the new Apple TV box itself, expect an updated design and new innards: the company’s latest A8 system-on-chip — or a variant of it: a dramatic increase in on-board storage to accommodate app — well beyond the 8GB in the current device; and an improved operating system that will support Siri voice control of Apple TV, and enable it remotely for a selection of Homekit-enabled home automation devices, as earlier reports have suggested. Presumably it will also feature a new remote. No word yet on price, though it will obviously be more than the current Apple TV, which recently had its price trimmed to $69 from $99 to make room for its successor. Note that Apple’s Web site now lists the device as “starting at $69.” FULL ARTICLE - http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnpaczkows...th-app-store-s |
