It's just like Vudu or Fandango, but the service is it's own separate entity with no affiliation to MA. Prices are pretty much the same for rentals.

Wow, sounds like a DOA service to me if they don’t participate in MA, especially for people who buy MA movies on their service.

Re: The Roku Thread

Yup that makes it a non-starter for me unless I'm getting a rental

Re: The Roku Thread

I got another Row8 $6 offer today from Intuit Quickbooks. Offer ends 5/31, code good until 6/30

For rentals it's fine for me. I don't rent that much anyway. So if it's something I don't intend to buy it works for me.

I had posted back in March for an offer back then.

Re: The Roku Thread

A raft of 30 original shows developed for — and briefly distributed by — now-defunct streaming startup Quibi are getting new life as Roku Originals, with a premiere date of May 20.

The shows, which include Emmy winner #FreeRayshawn as well as series starring Kevin Hart, Chrissy Teigen, Anna Kendrick, Chance the Rapper and more, will be available on the Roku Channel (see the full list below). The remaining titles from the full roster of 75 titles will go live on Roku by the end of 2021.

The free, ad-supported Roku Channel offers 190 live, linear channels and 40,000 movie and TV titles, to viewers beyond Roku’s sizable base of connected devices and smart TVs. Unlike the subscription model of Quibi, the originals will be available for free. Limited advertising will be shown in between the seven- to 10-minute episodes.

Great news! Only watched "Most Dangerous Game" on Quibi from the list...and loved it.

Looking forward to some Kiefer in "The Fugitive" - any other gems to check out?

The Fugitive is worth watching. I've also seen Most Dangerous Game and enjoyed that one too.

I heard Die Hart with Kevin Hart and John Travolta is funny .

Excellent. I was wondering where Reno 911! was going to end up and was hoping it'd be free or put on a service I already subscribed to. Episodes were still being released when I quit Quibi.

Yes because it originally aired on Quibi which only showed short episodes. I saw the season it’s basically a two hour movie chopped up.

Sounds better off being an animated series.

I guess you never paid attention to Quibi. They went bankrupt last year. They were a streaming service that made shows and movies that you watch on your phone. The episodes are so short because they assumed people would only have 7-10 minutes while on the move to watch something short. But, they launched during the pandemic when everyone was stuck at home and the business model ended up being a complete bust.

So Quibi sold all their content to Roku. I know 7-10 minutes seems too short and cheap, but I assume Roku got it really cheap.

No word on when all the shows are getting released? I was interested in seeing The Stranger but it wasn’t added with the batch today.

According to the story I read, they are releasing the content in 2 batches. The 2nd batch will come later this year.

Re: The Roku Thread

Watching The Fugitive now.

Its okay but the entire reason for chasing the guy for the bombing is seriously contrived.
And the way his wife was arrested was just dumb.

There is a Fugitive thread in TV talk if you would like to post your thoughts there.

Re: The Roku Thread

As I suspected the alternate angles from Reno 911! are either missing or the episode was reedited to include some of them. The same would probably be true for the other shows

Re: The Roku Thread

Roku and Saban Films have added the latest twist to fast-evolving movie release strategies, setting a pay-1 rights deal for several titles that will stream on the Roku Channel.

The pact will deliver films from Saban’s 2021 slate to Roku Channel viewers in the U.S. and Canada within as few as three months after theatrical and home entertainment release. They will be available for free, with limited commercial breaks.

Echo Boomers, starring Michael Shannon and Patrick Schwarzenegger, kicks off the arrangement on June 15. Future films that are part of the windows deal include Happily, starring Joel McHale and Kerry Bishé; Percy VS Goliath (in the U.S. only), starring Christopher Walken, Christina Ricci and Zach Braff; and Under the Stadium Lights with Laurence Fishburne and Milo Gibson. More films will be announced at a later date, the companies said.

The Roku Channel, a fast-growing part of Roku’s overall streaming business, now reaches households with about 70 million people, according to Roku. The hub has nearly 200 linear channels, 40,000 library titles and this year has added Roku Originals as well as programming stemming from the acquisition of This Old House. When it launched last week, the Roku Originals lineup consisted of several dozen shows acquired from shuttered mobile startup Quibi, though the banner is expected to diversify over time.

In an interview with Deadline, Roku VP of Programming Rob Holmes said feature films have been a key ingredient in the growth of the Roku Channel since its debut in 2017. The viewing destination does not require a Roku device or interface. It is available in the U.S., Canada and the UK on Amazon Fire TV, certain Samsung TVs and thru the web, iOS and Android devices.

“We’re not an SVOD, so overall there are just different economics,” Holmes said when asked to compare the deal with recent pay-1 deals like Sony’s watershed agreement with Netflix. He declined to offer guidance on pricing but said the advertising potential is the key driver for Roku. While the company does not break out ads as a line item in its financial reports, platform revenue (including ads) surged 71% in 2020 over 2019, to $1.3 billion. Results in the first quarter of this year also set records.

The compression of the typical window between theatrical, home video and streaming will enable Roku to leverage awareness of the Saban films, Holmes said. “Saban will have just spent money both in home entertainment and theatrical marketing to make consumers aware of them,” he said.

While Roku is not in any discussions for any other pay-1 deals, Holmes said, “As the Roku Channel continues to grow, it opens up more opportunities for content. I think you’ve seen us executing against those opportunities. … We keep finding pockets of new opportunities with a different set of partners based on that growing scale. And then that great content leads to more scale.”

Launched in 2014 with the support of media mogul and financier Haim Saban, the Saban Films has acquired, produced and distributed a range of titles. The boutique operation’s releases include The Homesman, a Western starring Hilary Swank and directed by Tommy Lee Jones that premiered in competition in Cannes. Saban has also backed fan favorites like Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell and Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

“Streaming has become an incredible way to experience movie-making magic from the comfort of your own home,” Saban Films President Bill Bromiley said, “and we are thrilled to bring an extraordinary lineup of entertainment to The Roku Channel and America’s No. 1 TV streaming platform.”

Jonathan Saba negotiated the deal on behalf of Saban Films.

Re: The Roku Thread

I finally cancelled my cable tv subscription and bought a new Roku stick for my bedroom to replace my cable box. The preprogrammed buttons on my new Roku are the best combination so far Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Hulu. Much better than the days of having Rdio as button. The only downside is that it took about an hour to set it up and log into all my streaming services.

Re: The Roku Thread

I've also cut the proverbial cord recently (damn you Dish for reminding me of contractual obligations) but I couldn't be happier., albeit $205 poorer.

TCL Roku TV + Sling TV + Locast + Streaming channels is the way to go for our household.

Also, just read that Roku Channel is adding 25+ more of Quibi's library of shows this coming Friday....!!
